Diemo
Minor Atoms are Silver Stick Finalists... |
|
The Diemo Minor Atom Cougars have had a busy 9-day
stretch. Our team has played six games total during that time, 2
in league play and 4 in the Regional Silver Stick Qualifier
Tournament.
On the last day of school, we faced Ajax and came
away with a 3-3 tie. Wins are so important as we are battling it
out with Whitby and Belleville for first place, but we could only
manage one point against a hot goaltender. Goals were scored by
Noah Hlapcic and Greg Thomas (2). On the next day in Trenton, it
was tight again. The Cougars outplayed the Hawks but deep into
the third, game remained scoreless. Finally, with 2:41 on the
clock, Dawson Murphy put one past the goalie and we came away with
the win. Although we have only lost one game in the league, the
Cougars now sit in third place.
In the much-anticipated Silver Stick Regional
Qualifier, Cobourg came out strong with a convincing 6-2 victory
over the Markham Waxers. Greg Thomas and John Campbell each fired
two goals, while Brody Waller and Matt Cavanaugh added singles.
In the next game, we played our local league rival, the Belleville
Jr. Bulls. We came out flat in the first period and got down 2-0,
but John Campbell replied in the third to bring the Cougars to
within a goal. Despite a very strong effort, we could not score
the equalizer and were defeated 2-1. In the final game of pool
play, we faced the Cooksville Phantoms (Mississauga) and came away
with a 5-0 victory with goals by Wyley Veinot (2), John Campbell
(2) and Chalmers McKeen. We advanced to the final with a second
place finish after round-robin play.
With a trip to the International Silver Stick
Tournament on the line, the Cougars again met Belleville in the
final on Saturday morning. Scoreless after one period, the game
opened up in the second with the Bulls scoring 3 times. It looked
bleak until a rush by Matthew Cavanaugh made the score 3-1 with 11
minutes to go. But again, the Bulls had an answer, scoring 2
minutes later to make the score 4-1

Diemo Minor Atom
Cougars Continue to Top Lakeshore League Division... |
|
The Minor Atom Jr. Cougars faced an
important week, going up against some of the other top teams in
the league and playing 3 games overall. On Sunday, Cobourg
traveled west to face the always tough Whitby Wildcats. With
Whitby sitting just behind the Cougars in the standings, and the
previous game having ended in a tie, the Cougars knew they had
to play well. With 2 goals each by Brody Waller and John
Campbell, and one by Wyley Veinot, we held a 5-4 lead until the
last minute. However, the Wildcats scored to tie the game with
55 seconds remaining and send the Cougars home with only a
point.
This past Friday, an improving
Clarington team visited the Memorial Arena in Cobourg. After a
tightly contested first period ended with no scoring from either
team, the Cougars broke out with goals by Matthew Smith, John
Campbell, Noah Hlapcic and Wyley Veinot (2) and came away with a
5-1 victory.
On Saturday, we faced the Jr. Bulls
in Belleville. After cheering on the Novices who had played the
previous game, the Cougars came out sluggish and could not
find any magic in either end of the rink, coming away with a 4-0
loss. This marked the first loss in regular season play for
this team, so the team was disappointed. However, perhaps the
loss was even more valuable than a win as the players discovered
that every victory has to be earned with hard work on the ice.
The Cougars still sit atop the
standings, but Whitby is closing fast and has two games in
hand. There is still a lot of exciting hockey to be played with
six league games remaining and the Regional Silver Stick
qualifying tournament over Christmas. The team also looks
forward to the imminent return of both Greg Thomas and Ethan
Diminie. (story submitted by Sam

Minor Peewees Unload Complete Arsenal on Ajax... |
|
The Minor Peewees
continued their winning ways in league play where they won both
home and road games to support their position in the
league standings.
Their home game saw
the young Cougars unload their complete arsenal on the visiting
Ajax Knights on route to an 11-2 victory. So complete that
every member of the Cobourg squad collected at least one point...
with many padding their stat sheets with multiple tallies.
The 1st period ended with both teams tied at ones but that was it
for the Knights as the Cougars came out firing in the second.
The Cougars went on a nine goal rampage that left the Cougar
Nation celebrating and the Knights unsure of what happened.
The 3M Line of
Cameron Murphy, Bryan McCormick and Josh Maguire led the way
with twelve points for the Cougars. Heading the pack with a 4
point night was winger Cameron Murphy. Murphy took it upon
himself to find the twine with his first hat trick of the season
while still managing to set up yet another. Rookie Bryan
McCormick held up his side of the 3M line as he came through with
a goal and three assists. Not to be outdone, Josh Maguire
delivered an impressive balance of two goals and two assists.
It was the Cougars
night as all three lines were represented on the score sheet.
Jack DiMarco and Wyatt Pattison potted a pair of goals a piece as
both scored with their own patented ways. DiMarco scored both on
break aways while Pattison found success both times hanging around
the net for the rebound. Anthony Melchionna scored one for
the Cougars making the eleven goal night complete. Support
for all the scoring came from Mariah Wilson with three assists,
Ali Razaiy and Blake Robillard with two assists each, and Shayne
Ruddy, Carter Stevenson and Trevor McNeely coming through with one
helper.
Stopping the pucks
for the Cougars was Michael Rolph who turned away 14 shots.
The Cougars dominated the shot count with an impressive 25-16
difference for the win.
After coming off
such an impressive offensive effort at home the Cougars headed
west to face their neighbours from Clarington. The Cougars
had tied the Toros earlier in the season so a win would help
distance them in the standings and set the stage for their rematch
next week.
With Branson Schell
in net the Cougars outshot the Toros 22-17 on route to a tightly
fought 1-0 road win. Schell delivered for the Cougars as
always and picked up his third shut out of the season on the way.
After scoring 11 goals at home earlier in the week, Cobourg scored
only one against the Toros but that was all they needed for the
victory. Scoring for Cobourg was Wyatt Pattison who
deflected a Blake Robillard shot from the point. Robillard
received the pass from Trevor McNeely.
Cobourg returns
to Clarington on Saturday December 22nd for a rematch with the
Toros. With the Christmas break just around the corner, Cobourg
sits one point out of 1st place in the Lakeshore League with one
game in hand over division leader Whitby.
The Minor Peewees
next "home games" are during the Silver Stick regional qualifier
from December 27th to December 30th at Memorial Arena.

Heartbreak Loss Drops
Major Bantams in League Standings... |
Slipping on the ice outside and slipping from 1st place on top
of the Lakeshore League happened this past week to the Cobourg
Firefighters Major Bantams with a squeaker loss in Trenton,
1-0.
For
the entire game, Cobourg and Quinte West battled continuously
for the puck and major saves were made by both goaltenders
keeping the game a scoreless tie, but a bad bounce and a funky
deflection put in the only goal in the dying seconds of the game
for Quinte West.
The
weather was a factor for the cancellation of the home gave
against Peterborough, but it will be rescheduled for this coming
Tuesday.
Cobourg travelled to Whitby Friday night and came out with a
point against the 3rd placed team tying them 3-3. The game
started out slow for the Cobourg team with Whitby getting the
first goal in the 1st period. Not much happened until the 3rd
period when Whitby came out with two power play goals. It was
starting to get a little bleak for the boys until the 6 min.
mark when the home team slacked off and the Jr. Cougars pounced
on the opportunity. Cobourg got on the scoreboard with a goal
by Connor Turland set up, in his usual style, by Evan Little.
Little wasn't done yet though getting the next goal with equally
fine assistance from Jamie Quigley and Garrett Wilson. Finally
in the last min., Whitby took a penalty and Cobourg pulled their
goalie for the extra attacker and Tyler Davey tied the game with
a wrist shot over the goalies head, assisted by Little and
Turland.
This tie kept Cobourg in second place but Whitby, Belleville and
Ajax are barking on their heels, all within points of each
other. We will be travelling to Belleville (weather permitting)
on Sunday and at home on Tues. with the makeup game with
Peterborough. (story submitted by Angie
Turland)

Home Sweet Home For
Sommerville Novices ... |
|
Home ice was
special ice for the Sommerville Novice Jr. Cougars. The
Cobourg Novices capped off an effective weekend winning the
championship of their own home grown tournament. For the
second straight season the Cobourg Novice Cougars dismantled their
opponents during their home tournament on route to the
Championship.
The Cougars easily
beat Guelph in the morning semi final match up 4-1. The Jr
Cougars made it easy for the Cougar nation as they jumped out to
an impressive four goal lead and held on to advance to the
afternoon final. Leading the scoring for Cobourg was Tanner
Sheppard with two goals, Kristian Pottle with a goal and an two
assists and Brendan Rylott scoring a single. Supporting the
cause with helpers were Devin Maudsley (2), Mac Lowry (1) and Kyle
Snyder(1).
Heading into the
finals, the Cougars dressed in black faced the Osgoode Rideau
Senators. With good consistent hockey they compiled a
comfortable 3-1 lead only to see the Senators fire back with two
late third period strikes. However not to be out done, the Novice
Cougars answered back just seconds later as Mac Lowry with
help from Tanner Sheppard and Corey Saman scored the go ahead goal
for the lead the Cougars would never relinquish. Kyle Snyder added
an insurance marker to give Cobourg the decisive 5-3 victory and
the championship.
Leading the way for
the Cougars in the finals were Mac Lowry with 2 goals and two
assists, Kristian Pottle with 1 goal and an assist and Brendon
Rylott and Kyle Snyder with a goal apiece. Supporting the
cause with helpers were Jacob Kellar with two assists, Corey Saman
with two assists, Tanner Sheppard and Nicholas Ainsworth with one
apiece. (photos submitted by Todd

MAJOR ATOMS WIN BIG AGAINST THE BELLEVILLE JUNIOR BULLS... |
|
Gray Eldridge
earned 3 assists in the Cougars win against the Belleville Bulls,
shortly after coming back from a broken leg which kept him out of
play for most of the regular season.
The Major Atoms
split games this week, losing against Pickering 4-1, with the lone
goal scored by Callum Wright, assisted by Forrest Chalovich-Epp
and Avery Slack. The Atoms bounced back on the road against
Belleville Saturday night. Cobourg opened the scoring 8 seconds
into the 1st with a goal from Mitchell Jackson,
assisted by Josh Jeschke and Callum Wright. 45 seconds later,
Jeff Christensen scored assisted by Jesse Orser and Connor
Stover. Christensen scored his second of the period off a pass by
Drew Wangen. Stover continued the roll scoring three minutes into
the second, assisted by Jeschke. Belleville made their way on the
board with 2 goals in the middle of the second, but Chalovich-Epp
scored a wrap around goal, off a pass by Gray Eldridge and with 51
seconds left in the second, Jeschke fired a bullet to score off
another great setup by Eldridge. Chalovich-Epp scored the lone
Cobourg goal in the third, assisted by Jeschke and Eldridge.
Belleville attempted to come back with 2 goals in the third, but
it wasnt enough. The Atoms skated to a 7-4 victory. The
Cougars are home to Quinte West, Tuesday at 6:30.

Cobourg Auto Collision Add Two
More Wins In League Play... |
The Cobourg Auto Collision Major Pee
Wee's continue their winning ways with a pair of Lakeshore
League victories.
Friday past the Cougars
welcomed Peterborough to the friendly confines of the Memorial
Arena. The locals show little hospitality however in handing the
visitors a 7-0 thumping. Captain Mitchell Gibson leads the
onslaught with a 4 goal performance while Riley Line contributes
a pair and Cameron Leeds rounds out the scoring with a single
marker. Quinn Cooper, Trent Stevenson and Benjamin Plue chip in
with 2 helpers apiece while Ben Wood, Jason Trumper, Brandon
Dennis and Leeds count single assists.
Jake Kawzenuk is very solid in
stopping all 20 shots for the shutout.
Saturday Cobourg travels to
Belleville for a big road contest. Belleville grabs an early 2-0
lead and is in front 3-2 at the end of the 2nd but the Cougars
get a pair in the 3rd for a huge 4-3 win. Dennis is the man of
the moment with the winner while Cooper, Line and Leeds also
light the lamp. Gibson plays set up man with 2 helpers with
singles to Dennis, Plue and d-man Hayden Arff.
A big week upcoming with an
exhibition Tues night in Newcastle followed by 2 HUGE league
contests. Friday at home vs 1st place Clarington @ 7:45 followed

Major Bantams Continue
to Shine... |
The
Cobourg Firefighter Major Bantam put another one in the win
column with a decisive 8-0 win over the Pickering Panthers of
the Lakeshore League.
Cobourg finished their home tournament from the past weekend
with a 2-2-0 record losing in the semi finals against Hillcrest
Summits but that didn't stop the boys from coming back to league
play with a win. The scoring started in the 1st with Jared
Nicholls getting help from Pearson Piechocki and Tyler Davey at
the 12 min mark. It took another 6 min. before Mike Rutherford
put one between the pipes (and legs of the goalie) assisted by
Jamie Quigley and Todd O'Rourke. O'Rourke finished the 1st
period with his solo goal.
Not
to be outdone, fellow defenseman Connor Turland started the 2nd
period with his contribution set up by Dylan Baxter and Garrett
Wilson. Evan Little put his solo goal in next and finishing off
the period was Davey assisted by Quigley & Rutherford. In the
third, Rutherford picked up his second goal of the game set up
by Quigley and Little and Davey put his second goal of the game
in assisted by Quigley (4 assists total for game) and
Rutherford.
Cobourg went on the road on Sunday to Quinte West and will be at
home on Tues., Dec 11, 2007. (story

TYKE REPORT
The Tim Horton Timbits Tyke division matchups
continued to provide some excitement this past weekend with
another pair of close games.
Game one featured the Leafs against the Flames.
The Leafs were able to hold off a four goal third period by the
Flames to win by a score of 8 to 5. Carter Clarke led all Leaf
scorers with 3 goals and an assist. Also scoring for the Leafs
were Logan Spagnolo and Nolan Fitzgerald both with 2 each and
Brendan James with 1. Adding assists on the day for the Leafs were
Kevan Holmquist(2), Alison Maudsley (2), Justin Brydges, Sasha
Shanker, and Ciara Fitzgerald.
Receiving the Cobourg Cougars "Hustler of the
Week" awards were Ray Chrysler of the Flames and Brooke Moore of
the Leafs.
The late game would also prove to be a very
close game. In fact, there was only 8 seconds left on the clock
when the Canadiens were able to pull out the 6 to 5 victory over
the Penguins. The Canadiens offence was led by Austin Gilmour with
the hat trick, Ben Cavanaugh with a pair, and Jordan Landry with
the heroic third period goal. Responding for the Penguins was Mark
Clarey with a four point performance (1 goal and 4 assists), Nolan
Stevenson with 2 goals and an assist, Tanner Diminie and Andrew
Smith with a goal each and Tate MacKenzie with an assist.
Receiving the Cobourg Cougars "Hustler of the
Week" awards in game two were Mark Clarey of the Penguins and
Jordan Landry of the Canadiens.
This week's action will feature the Canadiens
against the Leafs at 12pm and the Flames against the Penguins at
1pm. Both games will take place in Pad II.
ATOM HOUSE LEAGUE
Game One saw Medicine Shoppe defeat Kim Joice
State Farm by a score of 3-2 in dramatic fashion.
It was tied after one period play on goals by
Josh Bogaard(unassisted) and Isaak Hoskin(assist by Cavan Zinke).
Bogaard would score again in the second period to give Medicine
Shoppe a lead that would hold until the 1:11 mark of the third
period. Then, on a goal crease scramble, Cavan Zinke would tie the
game up on a goal set up by Hoskin and Cameron Brown. But Bogaard
would then complete his hat trick with 22.1 seconds left in the
match to give Medicine Shoppe the 3-2 victory. Backstop Jakob
Brown would again make some huge stops as his team was outshot 15
to 11. For State Farm, Aidan Foster was a force to be dealt with
all game long as he really stepped up to use his size and skating
to create scoring chances.
Lakeport Power were firing on all cylinders in
game two as they outlasted Legion Branch 133 by a score of 3-2 to
pick up their first win of the season! Goals by Cameron Desormeaux
and Alexandria Mackenzie in the first minute of play had Lakeport
in front two-nothing. Simon Wood set up the first marker.
Legion would respond with two goals from Sam
Williams to tie the match heading into the third. Isaac Claap
picked up two assists while Cameron McNaughton had a single. But
Desormeaux would finish up his best performance of the season by
scoring his second to give Lakeport the victory. Hunter Weatherby
would repel 4 shots on goal in the final minute of play to hold
the victory in place.
"The kids have been really patient and working
hard in a lot of close games," coach Shane Weatherby said. "To see
them get their first win was really great!" Brady James moved to
defence and quarterbacked his team throughout the match - proving
his worth as a leader for Lakeport. |

For CCHL President Jim Nairn, jumping on board was an easy
decision, "When the WNHGA approached us with the idea, we thought
it was terrific!" explains Nairn. "With over 500 kids playing in
all of our house league and OMHA rep games that week, we think it
is a great opportunity to help out."
