Diemo Minor Atoms
Sweep Ajax To Advance... |
After finishing off Quinte West in 4
games, Cobourg Diemo Minor Atoms faced Ajax in the Lakeshore Cup
semi-final. In game 1, a see-saw battle emerged. Cobourg took
an early lead on a goal by Greg Thomas. Ajax responded. John
Campbell put the Cougars up 2-1, but Ajax responded again to tie
the game. Brody Waller scored, but the resilient Knights would
not go away, scoring the tying goal early in the third and then
adding another to take the lead for the first time in the game.
With 1:49 to go in the game and an
offensive zone face-off, the Cougars pulled the goalie in an
attempt to tie the game. Wyley Veinot pushed the puck past the
Ajax netminder to even the score. With the goalie barely back
in the net, the Cougars waited only 25 seconds to score the game
winner. John Campbell scored his second of the game, managing
to knock the puck past the goal line in an agonizingly slow
fashion to win the game 5-4. The Cougars had taken the first
game of the series and perhaps more importantly, demoralized the
Knights who had not beaten Cobourg all season.
The very next night, the Cougars
travelled to Ajax in questionable weather and bad traffic.
Although the team was missing one goalie and 3 other players,
the game began as scheduled. A strong first period resulted in
a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chalmers McKeen. A good team game and
some excellent passing eventually overwhelmed the Knights. Two
goals by Jon Campbell, and others by Wyley Veinot, Gavin
Stevenson, Chris Nikolaou, and Noah Hlapcic led to a final score
of 7-1 and a 2 game lead in the series.
On Sunday in Cobourg’s Jack Heenan
Arena, the Cougars were anxious to end the series. Wyley Veinot
started the scoring and added two more for the hat trick, while
Chalmers McKeen scored another. Chris Nikolaou also played a
strong game, assisting on 3 of the game’s 4 goals. A late goal
by Ajax made the final score 4-2. Cobourg would send the
Knights home, winning the series 6 points to none.
Cobourg now awaits the winner of the
other semi-final series, which will most likely be Belleville.
The Cougars hope to get another crack at the Bulls, a team that
they have yet to beat this year in 4 attempts.

action. This week the Jr. Cougars were able complete the sweep

Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewees Continue Their Winning Ways …. |
|
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars commenced play in
the next round of the playoffs with a decisive 5 to 2 victory over
the visiting Ajax Knights.
Game
#1 of the Lakeshore League Semi-Finals was played on Thursday
February 28th at Memorial Arena in Cobourg. After
shaking off the rust following a week long layoff, the Jr. Cougars
got on track in the second period with three quick goals to take
control of the game. The scoring started with Centre Trevor
McNeely winning the face-off in the Ajax zone and drawing the puck
to Winger Owen Whately. Whately moved the puck behind the net
and fed linemate Anthony Melchionna who redirected the pass at the
edge of the crease high under the cross bar. Cobourg’s second
goal was potted by Josh Maguire who in a goal mouth scramble
jammed the puck under the sprawled goalie. Assists on the play
were awarded to linemates Cameron Murphy and Bryan McCormick for
their hardwork in cycling the puck along the boards. Three
minutes later, this line would connect for another goal when
defenseman Carter Stevenson keeps the puck in the offensive zone
and passes to Maguire who in turn threads a pass across the slot
to Murphy who rifles a wrist shot behind the outstretched glove of
the goalie. The Jr. Cougars fourth goal of the game was scored
on a nice individual effort by Owen Whately. The puck was
gathered up in the neutral zone and Whately with speed enters the
offensive zone and fires a wrist shot from the high slot. The
Minor Peewees closed out the scoring with 9 minutes left in the
third period when Wyatt Pattison feeds Jack DiMarco from behind
the net. DiMarco makes no mistake on the play and one times the
pass to beat the Ajax goalie on the short side.
Cobourg outshot
Ajax in the contest by a margin of 28 to 13. Michael Rolph was in
goal for the Minor Peewees to backstop the team to the victory.
The Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewees next home game is
Thursday March 6th at 7:45 pm in Memorial Arena. (story

Atom House League Update ... |
|
The Atom house league
playoffs entered week two last week with two exciting match ups.
The first game saw State
Farm take down Medicine Shoppe by a score of 4 to 2. Cavan Zinke
had two goals for State Farm, including the winner. Both shots
were laser beams to the top corner from the hash marks. Tyler
Marshall and Aidan Foster also scored for State farm while Isaak
Hoskin, Nik Ormel and Foster picked up the assists. Medicine
Shoppe was down 2-0 but fought back to tie on goals by Josh
Bogaard and Gavin Willcocks in the second. Picking up the helpers
on those goals were Simon Pichl, Brad Barrett and Dylan Roberts.
The two late second-period goals by Zinke and Foster in the second
proved to be the backbreaker for Medicine Shoppe.
The Second game was a
one-goal victory for Legion 133 over Lakeport Power. Lakeport had
opened up 4-1 lead by the middle of the second period on goals by
Cameron Desormeaux, Camerons Enns, Jared March and Brian Cirne.
Nick Kuehn picked up a pair of helpers while singles went to
Daniel Filce, Jeffrey Lorefice, Brady James, Desormeaux, Enns and
Cirne. But Legion would score 4 unnswered goals in the last 15
minutes of the game to pull out the win. Almost unstoppable,
Beckett O'Neil would finish it off with the winner and his FOURTH
goal of the day at 1:49 of the third. Sam Williams tallied the
other goal while Isaac Clapp led the way with 3 assists, Jakob
Holmes had two helpers and singles went to Liam Bruce and Dylan
Stadtke.(story submitted by Phil

Sommerville Novices
Gain Strangle Hold In Series... |
|
The Cobourg Sommerville
Novice Jr. Cougars were able to take a real strangle hold on their
semi final series against Oshawa winning 3-1 in Oshawa and taking
the series lead 3 games to 0 in the best of 7 series. Cobourg came
out quickly with Devin Maudsley capitalizing on a Tanner Sheppard
rebound within the first 30 seconds of the game to score that ever
important first goal. It wasn't until the second that Cobourg was
able to elude the tight checking of Oshawa and Kyle Snyder was
able to increase the lead to 2-0 on a pass from Corey Saman.
Midway through the third Oshawa was finally able to solve the
tough defense and goaltending of Cobourg and cut the lead to 1.
Late in third Cobourg sealed
the deal with Nicholas Ainsworth scoring a goal that was set up by
the hard work below the net by Tanner Sheppard and Kyle Snyder who
both assisted on the goal. Cobourg has the opportunity to finish
the series off at home at Cobourg Memorial on Tuesday, February
26th at 6:30pm. (story submitted by Jeff

Diemo Minor Atoms Resilient Until The
End... |
|
After coming back from a 2 game deficit to tie their semi-final
series, the Diemo Minor Atoms bowed out of the OMHA Championship
side with a 2-1 loss against Whitby. Down 2-0 early in the game,
the Cougars fought back with a goal by Greg Thomas. However,
outstanding goaltending by the Whitby keeper denied Cobourg the
tying goal. Whitby would advance to the league final against
Belleville while Cobourg entered second season.
Disappointed in the loss, but ready for more hockey, the Cobourg
team prepared for the first round against Quinte West. The series
began with a 5-2 victory at home. Goal scorers were Dawson
Murphy, John Campbell, Noah Hlapcic, Wyley Veinot and Owen Cattell.
In game 2, the home team came out strong and Cobourg struggled.
Despite a fairly lop-sided game played mostly in the other team’s
end, the Cougars could only manage a 2-2 tie against the Hawks.
Both goals were scored by Wyley Veinot. The series would now go
at least 4 games.
In game 3 back in Cobourg, the Cougars played a solid game and
earned a 4-2 victory. Goal scorers were John Campbell (2), Wyley
Veinot and Matthew Smith. In game 4 this past Saturday on the
road, the Cougars played a very strong game and ended the Hawks’
hopes of an upset with a dominating 6-1 victory. Passing seemed
to be the difference in this game as the team shared the puck all
over the ice en route to the win. Goal scorers were not available
at press time.
The Lakeshore Cup semi-finals begin this week
with a 6 point series with the Ajax Knights. The Minor Atoms
hope to make it past Ajax to face their arch-rivals from
Belleville in the final of the Lakeshore Cup. However, the team
is not taking anything for granted as this is an improved Ajax
team that has given us trouble this season.

Cobourg Auto Collision Peewee
Cougars Lose In Series Heart Breaker ... |
The Cobourg Auto Collision Peewee
Cougars conclude a successful Lakeshore League Season with a
tough 5 game series loss to Whitby in the OMHA 1/4 Finals.
Drake Veinot is the only Cougar able
to solve the Whitby tender as Cobourg drops a 5-1 decision.
Whitby is full value tor the win as the Wildcats dominate at
both ends.
The Cougars once again come out flat
and are blown out of their own rink in an 8-3 embarrassment.
Brandon Dennis nets 2 goals and Cameron Leeds pots the other.
Micaela Smith contributes 2 helpers but Cobourg is really never
in the game as the locals fall behind 2 games to none in the
best of 5 series.
Cobourg takes their show on the road
and with their backs to the wall, are able to earn a hard fought
2-2 tie. Jayden Snyder is the man of the moment with 38 saves in
a terrific performance between the pipes. Mitchell Gibson and
Jake Campbell give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead but Whitby
knots things up in the 3rd. O/T solves nothing and the series
continues.
The locals come out flying and are
never behind in a convincing 6-2 win. Dennis and Leeds are the
trigger man with 3 apiece while Gibson and Quinn Cooper chip in
3 helpers each. Snyder is once again solid in the victory.
Back to back games do not seem to
agree with Cobourg and with their playoff lives on the line, the
Cougars come up short in a 4-1 defeat. For the 3rd straight game
Snyder gives Cobourg a chance with some big stops early but only
Riley Line is able to beat the Wildcats goalie.
Cobourg will continue in the
Lakeshore League playoffs and await the winner of the
Belleville/Pickering series (story

Polymer Extrusion
Minor Peewees Bow Out of OMHA Playdowns... |
|
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars have been
eliminated from the OMHA Playdowns at the hands of the Belleville
Jr. Bulls. In a hard fought and entertaining series, the Jr.
Bulls prevailed by winning a pivotal game three in Belleville on
Wednesday night and then closing out the series with cliff hanger
the next night in Cobourg. Three of the four games in this
series were decided in overtime.
On
Wednesday February 20th, the Jr. Bulls defeated the
Minor Peewees by a score of 2 to 1. The game was decided with
1.43 left in overtime. The Jr. Cougars opened the scoring in the
first period with
a goal by Jack
DiMarco. Wyatt Pattison passed it to DiMarco
at the side of the net where he slipped it past the goaltender for
the lone Cougar goal.
The Jr. Bulls rallied and scored the equalizer with less than a
minute left in the second period. After a scoreless
third period the game went into overtime. For over 8 ˝
minutes of overtime hockey, the two teams moved back and forth
between the two ends of the ice with the both goaltenders taking
turns to thwart offensive drives. Belleville however,
on a goal mouth scramble, was successful in breaking the tie and
emerged as the victor to lead the series 2 games to 1.
Branson Schell played a stellar game turning aside 31 shots in the
loosing cause.
The
next night, the two teams returned to play in Cobourg. The Jr.
Cougars, after a rousing pre-game pep talk by Coach Jay Stevenson,
hit the ice with boundless determination and desire. On the
first shift of the game, Captain Josh Maguire deposited his own
rebound over the goalie’s blocker. Cameron Murphy, battling in
the corner, was awarded an assist on the play. Over the next two
periods of play, the lead in the game would change three times.
In the second period, the Jr. Cougars would tie the score on a
breakaway by Jack DiMarco. Defenseman Shayne Ruddy would be
awarded an assist for the break-out pass. Three minutes later,
the Minor Peewees would regain the lead when Owen Whately pounced
on a rebound in the goalie’s crease on a shot from the low slot by
Trevor McNeely who received an assist on the play. Belleville
early in the third period would tie the score, only to have
Cobourg regain the lead 2 ˝ minutes later when Maguire forced a
turnover in the high slot and fires a wrist shot under the
cross-bar. With 3 ˝ minutes left in regulation time, Belleville
scores the equalizer and forces overtime. The game and series
was decided at the mid-point of the overtime period on another
goal scored by Belleville at the edge of the crease.
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars will now return
to the Lakeshore League and battle for the Lakeshore Cup.

Sommerville Novice
Cougars On a Roll... |
|
The
Cobourg Sommerville Novice Jr. Cougars continue to work hard and
playing as a team as they defeated Peterborough in four straight
while outscoring their opponent 28-3 in OMHA quarter final action.
The series win put the Novices into the semis against a tough
opponent in Oshawa. The first game showed Cobourg that they would
be in tough with the score tied at 2-2 late in the second before
Cobourg would score 2 goals to take the first game 4-2.
Leading
the scoring was Tanner Sheppard with 3 goals while Mac Lowry found
the net for the other. Helpers went to Brendan Rylott with 2 and
singles went to Jacob Kellar, Kristian Pottle and Keegan Ferguson.
Game 2 was similar to game 1 in that the score was again tied 0-0
going into the third when Devin Maudsley capitalized on a Tanner
Sheppard rebound to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Late in the third
Oshawa was able to respond with a goal that would end regulation
time tied at 1-1. The overtime was back and forth action and
Cobourg showed the heart they have showed all year long and Tanner
Sheppard was able to seal the deal with the overtime winner two
minutes and thirty seconds into the extra period. Both Cobourg
goalies Max Carlson and Alex Mercier played well turning away a
number of scoring opportunities. The Novices now go back to Oshawa
for game three up 2-0 on Saturday, February 23rd at the Legends
Centre at 1:30pm and then back home for game 4 on Tuesday,
February 26th at 6:30pm. (story submitted

Murphy Delivers Overtime
Heroics... |
|
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars started the OMHA
Quarter-Finals in dramatic fashion with a come from behind victory
on the road over the Belleville Jr. Bulls.
On
Saturday February 16th the Jr. Cougars travelled to
Belleville and won Game #1 of a best 3 out of 5 series. The
Minor Peewee outcome was decided in overtime with Jr. Cougars
prevailing with a 3 to 2 victory.
The
Jr. Cougars had to shake off the rust after waiting on the
sidelines for 12 days for the series to start. After a scoreless
first period,
Belleville
opened the scoring at 13.31 of the Second Period. The Jr.
Cougars however were unfazed and quickly tied the score two
minutes later. In a goal mouth scramble, winger Bryan McCormick
pounded the puck through a maze of players at the edge of the
goalie’s crease.
The
Belleville Jr. Bulls opened the third period with a flurry and
notched their second goal of the game early in the period.
The play remained evenly matched through the balance of the period
until the last minute of play. With goalie Branson Schell pulled
for the extra attacker, Owen Whately redirected a pass from the
high slot from Jack DiMarco to tie the game and send the match
into overtime.
With
the momentum now on the side of the Jr. Cougars, it took almost 7
˝ minutes of overtime hockey to decide the outcome of the game.
Defenseman Blake Robillard from the offensive blueline fired a
wrist shot toward the Belleville goal where Cameron Murphy was
positioned at the edge of the blue ice to deflect the shot. The
Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars had stole the win on the road and the
crucial two points in the series.
The
Minor Peewees next home game in the playoffs is Sunday February
17th at 6:30 pm in Pad #2. If a Game #4 is required,
it will be played in Pad #1 on Thursday February 21st
at 7:45 pm.

Cobourg Midget
Girls Golden at Silver Stick... |
The Fisher Foodland Midget BB girls
hockey team traveled to Sarnia recently for the International
Silver Stick with high expectations and drive and were not
disappointed. They battled hard in every game all weekend and
were ultimately rewarded with the Gold Medal and Silver Stick
Championship Banner.
Round robin action started off with
a close 2-1 win over the North York Storm. Shonna Spicer scored
early in the first period on a shot from linemate Kaitlyn
Severin. There was no scoring in the second period but the
penalty killing team did an excellent job of fighting off
attackers during a two man disadvantage for four minutes early
in the period. Midway through the third period, Keely Lowry got
the insurance marker with assists going to Christina Williams
and Rikki Ash. Spicer earned the MVP honour of the game.
In the second game of the
tournament, played early Saturday morning Cobourg defeated the
Kitchener Lady Rangers 2-1. Goaltender Natalie Button was
exemplary between the pipes, allowing only one goal late in the
first period. Cobourg again got on the score board with 4
minutes remaining in the first on a goal by Carleigh Simpson
with assists going to Stephanie Turk and Shelby Rutherford.
Chirstina Williams scored the go ahead goal early in the second
on a rebound from Shelby Rutherford and Lowry. Kitchener fought
back hard but Cobourg stepped up the level of play and thwarted
them at every turn. With five minutes left, Kitchener was
awarded a penalty shot. Goalie Button was on top of her game,
stopping the opponent cold. MVP honours this game went to
Kaitlyn Severin for her great two-way play.
Last game of the round robin was a
battle for 1st or 2nd place against rivals
Markham-Stouffville. The girls knew that it would be a hard
fought battle against the less disciplined Markham team. First
period proved to be a goalie’s dual with both sides creating
numerous scoring chances and neither Button nor her Markham
counterpart giving up a goal. The game was locked in a
scoreless tie until half way through the second period, when
Taylor Cunningham finally slipped one by the netminder with
Taylor Bell getting the helper. This proved to be the game
winner with Button coming up some amazing saves. Button earned
the MVP honours for this game leading her team through to the
semi-final round.
Next the Cobourg girls met Oakville,
the 2nd place pool winners from the other division.
Oakville got on the scoreboard first with a goal midway through
the first. This lit a spark in the hometown girls who hadn’t
had to come from behind yet in the tournament. Turk opened the
scoring for Cobourg early in the second period with help from
her line mates Cunningham and Emma Bowen. Lowry broke the
deadlock early in the third on an unassisted effort skating,
around several opponents and slamming the puck home. Oakville
kept up the pressure but were unable to break through the
defensive zone. Spicer ensured the 3-1 win on a empty netter
assisted by Lowry and Ariana Van Laren.. Lowry deservedly was
selected as the MVP player of the game.
Markham-Stouffville narrowly beat out
Petrolia in overtime in the other semi-final match to earn the
right to play Cobourg for the Championship game on the Olympic
sized Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre. Both teams knew
everything was on the line and held nothing back. The game was
intense with seven penalties assessed each side. Markham-Stouffville
drew first blood five minutes into the game. Cobourg was held off
until late in the first on a goal by Lowry assisted by Simpson.
Two minutes later Van Laren put a long shot the shoulder of the
goalie for the goal ahead goal. This proved to be the game
winner. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the
second. Three minutes into the third Van Laren tucked home the
insurance marker on a shot from Severin. For the remainder of the
game, the girls played great defensively ensuring the Silver Stick
win. The game MVP, Simpson, earned a composite stick for her
outstanding effort.
Coach Chris Bell was extremely pleased
with the teamwork and desire shown by his players. He is
confident that the girls can build on the tenacity and effort
shown in this tournament to carry them through the playoffs and
the provincial championships in April. During league play
Cobourg sit in 2nd behind Markham-Stouffville and are
waiting to find out their opposition is for the first round of
playoffs. (story and photo submitted by

Major atom
Cougars make most of second chance...
|
|
At
the outset of the season, reaching the Ontario Minor Hockey
Association quarter-final playoff round wasn't expected for the
Cobourg Lorenz and Son major atom Cougars. That feeling only
intensified last Sunday.
Trailing a second-round best-of-five series 2-1, the Cougars were
defeated 3-0 by the host Whitby Wildcats. Cobourg players were
gracious in defeat. They shook hands with the opponents from
Whitby and then raised their sticks to salute all the fans that
cheered for them. The Cougars were eliminated from the OMHA
playoffs. Or so it seemed.
When
the report was sent to the OMHA office, it was detected that a
Whitby player who was listed on the game sheet for Game 4 had
received an automatic one-game suspension for hitting from behind
the previous game.
OMHA
regulation 8.1 (h) states that "Any player or team official whose
name appears on the official game report and/or participates in
the game and is ineligible for any reason will cause their team to
forfeit the game regardless of the score of the game. The
non-offending team shall be awarded the two points for the game.
In OMHA Playdowns, the points will be awarded and the series will
continue as per the contract. The coach shall be suspended for
three games. The ineligible player shall be required to fulfill
the balance of any suspension that made him ineligible."
Following the rules, the OMHA penalized the Wildcats and on Monday
afternoon the Cougars received word that a fifth and deciding game
would be played in Whitby that evening. If the Cobourg club could
not make it, that game would be forfeited in favour of the
Wildcats. Cobourg coach Mark Diminie was unsure if the suspended
Whitby player had competed in the fourth game of the series, but
regardless, on paper the Wildcats management made a mistake.
Diminie said the OMHA caught the error. It wasn't Cobourg that put
the game under protest.
"We
had nothing to do with it. In their eyes, or at least some of the
parents, they thought we had protested the game. It was a very
hostile atmosphere when we came into the arena," Diminie said.
"My
only concern was that these kids are only 10 years old. I knew
they were going to sense that parents are mad. I just didn't want
that to affect them."
Once
the game started, though, the series was settled on the ice. The
Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first period despite some stellar
play from Cobourg goaltender MJ Weightman who, Diminie said,
prevented what should have been "four or five more sure goals."
Despite facing shorthanded situations in the second period, the
Cougars responded to tie the game. Drew Wangen scored from the
point on a power play at 2:13, which was Cobourg's only
man-advantage of the contest.
Jeff
Christensen then netted a shorthanded goal with four minutes left
in the second. Facing a two-men-short situation early in the third
period, Weightman turned aside each shot he faced to start what
would be a flawless final frame.
Forrest Chalovich-Epp scored the eventual winning
goal with 6:26 remaining in regulation time. After Cobourg battled
through one more shorthanded situation, Stover scored into an
empty Whitby net with 38 seconds left to secure the 4-2 victory.

Peewee Cougars Advance
To Next Round... |
|
The Cougars close out Trenton with a
pair of hard fought victories.
Tues Feb 5 @ Cobourg.
Jayden Snyder pitches the shutout
with plenty of help from all concerned. The defensive pairings
of Megan Behan/Drake Veinot, Hayden Arrf/Jason Trumper and
Micaela Smith/Trent Stevenson are awesome in limiting Trenton to
only a handful of chances. Overall Cobourg plays a near flawless
game defensively and is full value for the 3-0 victory.
Wed Feb 6 @ Trenton.
With an opportunity to close out the
series, the Cougars do not disappoint in registering a solid
win. With the score even at 1 entering the 3rd period, Cobourg
is not to be denied as first Quinn Cooper and then Cameron Leeds
beat the Hawks keeper to give Cobourg a lead at 3-1. Cooper adds
an empty netter and a Trenton goal at the buzzer makes the final
4-2. The Cougars take the series 3 games to 1.
Cobourg now moves on to the OMHA 1/4
finals to face league rival Whitby. The Wildcats and the Cougars
finished the regular season tied for 1st place so the series
shapes up as a great matchup.
Game 1 goes Wed Feb 13 in Whitby
with Game 2 scheduled for Fri Feb 15 at Cobourg Memorial @ 7:45
pm. (story submitted by Geoff Skuse)

Minor Peewees Perform Clean Sweep... |
|
After taking care of the Ajax
Knights in four games in round one, the Minor Peewee Cougars
continued their offensive premise with an impressive series sweep
of the Oshawa Little Generals.
On
January 30th, the Jr. Cougars hosted Oshawa at Memorial
Arena and emerged victorious with a 4 to 1 result. The Little
Generals scored at 3:59 of the 1st period but were held
off the score
sheet for the balance of the game by goalie Branson
Schell. The Jr. Cougar goaltender turned aside 19 shots and
allowed his team mates the time necessary to mount an effective
comeback and win the game. Defenseman Shayne Ruddy scored his
first goal of the season to start the Minor Peewees on their way,
with Josh Maguire, Anthony Melchionna and Bryan McCormick also
contributing single markers. Assists were awarded to Blake
Robillard with two, Melchionna, Cameron Murphy, Josh Maguire,
Trevor McNeely and Jack DiMarco. Cobourg out
shot Oshawa by a
margin of 25 to 20.
On
Sunday February 3rd, the Minor Peewees took a break
from the Super Bowl festivities to play Game #2 in the playoff
series against Oshawa. In a fast paced and evenly matched game,
the Jr. Cougars prevailed with a 2 to 0 victory. Cobourg opened
the scoring at 8:59 of the 2nd period on a two way
passing play between Anthony Melchionna and Trevor McNeely which
allowed the Jr. Cougars to gain the offensive zone. McNeely
dished the puck back to defenseman Blake Robillard at the top of
the face
off circle who beat the Oshawa goaltender under the
crossbar with a wrist
shot. The game remained tightly played
until 8:01 of the 3rd period when Josh Maguire on a two
on one breakout with winger Cameron Murphy as the decoy, was
successful in beating the goaltender with a wrist
shot from the low
slot through the five hole. Assists on the play were awarded to
Robillard and Shayne Ruddy. Michael Rolph backstopped the Minor
Peewees to the victory earning the shutout for his efforts.
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars swept the Oshawa
Little Generals in OMHA playdowns in a tightly played series.
The Jr. Cougars were victorious in Game #3 with a 2 to 1 victory
on the road in Oshawa. The win vaulted the Minor Peewees into
the OMHA Quarter-Finals.
The
Oshawa Little Generals in their attempt to stave off elimination
played a determined and hard nosed game of hockey. After a
scoreless 1st period, the Generals finally found the
back of the net at 13.47 of the 2nd period. Goalie
Branson Schell slammed the door shut after turning away 19
shots. Schell’s stellar play between the pipes allowed his team
mates time to get on track and a shot at the win. Captain Josh
Maguire became a dominant force in the third period and lead the
team to victory scoring both Cobourg goals. At 10:38 of the 3rd
period, Maguire scooped up the loose puck in the defensive zone
and streaked down the ice splitting the back
checkers and deked the
goalie on his glove side. The game winning goal was scored on
the power play with Cameron Murphy and Jack DiMarco playing strong
along the boards deep in the
Oshawa zone. DiMarco found an open Maguire who made no mistake
in firing a wrist shot from the low slot.
The
Minor Peewees’ now await the winner of the Belleville / Whitby
series.

Cobourg Auto Collision Peewees
Split in Series Action... |
The Cobourg Auto Collision Peewee's
start their 2nd round series with arch rival Quinte West Hawks.
Game 1...Cobourg draws first blood
with a hard fought 3-2 home victory. Quinn Cooper leads the way
with a dominant offensive and defensive performance. Cooper
tallies twice and is a force on the forecheck as he continually
frustrates the Trenton attack. Riley Line contributes the 3rd
marker for the locals. A solid defensive effort from the entire
team as the Hawks are limited to just 13 shots on Cougars tender
Jayden Snyder.
Game 2...The Cougars lose an
absolute heartbreaker bowing 2-1 in overtime. Quinte West jumps
out to an early lead just 11 seconds into the game with a rocket
which beats Cobourg goalie Jake Kawzenuk. Cobourg ties things up
with a 2nd period marker off the stick of Brandon Dennis but
despite outshooting Trenton 15-5 in the 3rd period the Cougars
are unable to solve the Hawks tender. Cobourg continues to press
the issue in O/T but with approx 4 min to play in the extra
period the Hawks manage to slip one past Kawzenuk for the
winner.
This best of 5 series now returns to
Cobourg for game 3 Tues Feb 5 @ 7:45 pm with game 4 scheduled in
Trenton the following night. Game 5 if necessary will go Friday
night at Cobourg Memorial @ 7:45 pm.

Veinot Scores Overtime Winner to Tie the Series For Diemo Minor
Atoms.. |
The Diemo Minor Atoms have had a
very busy stretch of hockey over the last 12 days. Up a game in
the first round series against Pickering, the Cougars outlasted
a determined Panther squad in game 2 on the road. With two
goals by Wyley Veinot in the first period, it appeared as though
it would be another romp. However, Pickering scored 2 to send
the game into overtime. Just 21 seconds into overtime, Veinot
completed the hat trick to send the Cougars home with the win.
In the third game back in Cobourg, two goals by Veinot and one
by Matthew Smith finished off the visiting Pickering team in the
game and in the series three games to none.
Next came round 2 of the playoffs
against the dangerous Whitby Wildcats. With a shorter game than
has been played all year and with a start in pad 2, the Cougars
were in tough. Before the team could even get their feet under
them, a quick goal early in the first had them down one.
Another in the second meant that that Cougars needed to
respond. Despite some strong play in the rest of the game, we
could not put anything past the goalie and lost the first game
of the series 2-0.
In game 2 on the road, the Cougars
started off the game in a similar fashion. Down 3-0 in the
first period, Chalmers McKeen put one in late in the first.
After a scoreless second period, John Campbell scored to give
the Cougars some life. However, the Wildcats answered right
back to make the score 4-2 and send Cobourg home down 2-0 in the
series.
With our backs against the wall, we
showed our true character in games 3 and 4. A furious start in
game 3 led to a goal by Wyley Veinot. Whitby fought back with 2
of their own, but two goals in the third period by John Campbell
and Greg Thomas gave us the 3-2 win and extended the series.
Back in Whitby in game 4, again facing elimination, the Cougars
started on fire again but the defence held on and no goals were
scored for either team, sending the scoreless draw to overtime.
In an exciting overtime, Wyley Veinot put the puck past the
netminder in a goal-mouth scramble to earn the 1-0 win with 3:21
remaining on the clock! The Cougars would live another day…
Game 5 in the series is Tuesday at
6:30 in Pad I!!! The Diemo Minor Atoms would really love all
the support they can get. (story
