Polymer Extrusion
Minor Peewees Advance to 2nd Round in the Playoffs... |
|
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee Jr. Cougars advanced to the
second round of the OMHA Playoffs with two convincing wins over
the Ajax Knights this past week.
On
Thursday January 24th, the Jr. Cougars hosted the
Knights and dominated the game with a 7 to 2 victory. Leading
the Jr. Cougars to victory was the “Yellow Line” which is aptly
named after the colour of their practice jerseys. The Yellow
Line, comprised of centre Trevor McNeely and wingers Owen Whately
and Anthonly Melchionna, each contributed four points to propel
the Minor Peewees to victory. Whately led all scorers with a hat
trick and an assist, while Melchionna chipped in with one goal and
three assists, and McNeely contributing with four assists. Other
goal scorers for the Jr. Cougars were Josh Maguire with two goals
and Cameron Murphy with a single marker. Assists were awarded to
Maguire, Wyatt Pattison, Murphy, Blake Robillard, Bryan McCormick
and Shayne Ruddy. Michael Rolph tended goal for the Minor
Peewees and turned away 15 Ajax shots to assist in the winning
cause.
On
Saturday January 26th, the Jr. Cougars travelled down
Highway 401 to Ajax with a large contingent of cheering fans.
Coach Stevenson before the game challenged his players advising
that the last win is always the hardest to achieve and that to be
successful they would have to play three full periods of honest
hardworking hockey. The players rose to the challenge and
prevailed with a decisive 6 to 2 victory. The turning point
in the game was at 8:54 of the second period, with the Jr. Cougars
leading 1 to 0, Jack DiMarco while killing a penalty was hauled
down by the defense on a breakaway. Awarded a penalty shot,
DiMarco made no mistake with this opportunity and beat the
sprawled Ajax goaltender to the blocker side with the deke. The
momentum shifted and Jr. Cougars quickly scored two more goals
before closing out the second period with a 4 to 0 lead.
Leading the Jr. Cougars to the win was team Captain Josh Maguire
with a natural hat trick. Other goal scorers for the Minor
Peewees were Owen Whately and Wyatt Pattison. Assists were
awarded to Ali Razaiy with two and singles to Trevor McNeely,
Blake Robillard and DiMarco. The goaltending in the game was
shared by Branson Schell and Michael Rolph to backstop the team to
victory in a game where the Jr. Cougars outshot their opponents by
a margin of 28 to 12.
The
Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewee
Cougars will be playing the Oshawa
Little Generals in OMHA Round #2 of the playoffs with the first
game being played in Cobourg on Wednesday January 30th at 8 pm in

Diemo Minor Atoms
Battle It Out At Silver Stick Final Tournament... |
The Minor Atoms began their playoff run this past week.
Finishing in second place overall with only one regular season
loss, the Cougars drew the 7th place Pickering
Panthers. In the first game of the six point series on Thursday
night, Brody Waller scored a hat trick in leading us to an 8-0
victory. Although the game was not pretty to watch, we managed
to get the 2 points from an overmatched Pickering squad.
The very next morning, the team headed off to Newmarket for the
first game of the International Silver Stick Finals against the
Kanata Blazers. The early start did not seem to affect the
Cougars as we came out hard, getting an early lead on a goal by
Noah Hlapcic in the first period. The Blazers tied it in the
second, but Hlapcic scored again in the 3rd and the
Cougars held on to win the game 2-1. After some lunch and
watching a number of other games in the beautiful Magna Center,
the Cougars laced the skates up against the Orillia Terriers.
Orillia went up a goal but Wyley Veinot responded to tie it up.
Noah Hlapcic gave us the lead, but Orillia answered with 3 of
their own. Two goals by Brody Waller, including one he knocked
out of mid-air, tied it up again. But Orillia would prove to be
too much, scoring the go-ahead goal in the third and then icing
it with a shot from their own end that found the net with 21
seconds remaining.
A win and a loss put us in the position of needing a victory
against the Brampton Battallion to advance in the tournament.
John Campbell and Wyley Veinot both scored to give the Cougars
the early lead on Saturday morning. However, Brampton roared
back in the third to tie the game. Because both teams would be
eliminated by a tie score, both goalies were pulled in the last
minute of the game. Despite intense pressure in the offensive
zone, the team could not put it in the empty net and the game
ended 2-2, ending the tournament for the disappointed Cougars.
Our overall record was 1-1-1, but it was not good enough to
advance despite some excellent efforts by our boys.
The first round of the playoffs continue this week with a visit
to Pickering on Tuesday and game 3 of the series back here on
Thursday. (story submitted by Sam

playoff series at Home against the Ajax Knights on Thursday
January 17th with a convincing 6 to 0 victory.
Branson Schell backstopped the Jr. Cougars to the victory with his
7th shutout of the season. An effective forecheck by
all three forward lines limited the Knights attack and created
numerous scoring chances for the Jr. Cougars. Leading the Jr.
Cougars goal scorers was Cameron Murphy with two goals, one of
which was a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. Adding single
markers was Mariah Wilson, Josh Maguire, Trevor McNeely and Owen
Whately. Assists were registered by Wyatt Pattison, Murphy,
Whately, Anthony Melchionna, Maguire, Shayne Ruddy and McNeely.

Cobourg Polymer
Extrusion Minor Peewees Claim First Place... |
|
In
August as tryouts for the Minor Peewee team were underway, Head
Coach Jay Stevenson challenged the players to strive to be the
best that they could be. “Through hard work, strong team play,
and some luck along the way, anything was possible within the
competitive OMHA Lakeshore League” he continued. As the dust
settled at the conclusion of the regular season last week, the
Minor Peewees had secured first place overall with a convincing
record comprised of 19 wins, 2 losses, 3 ties in 24 league
games. Coach Stevenson commended his players following their
last game for rising to the challenge. He continued by stating
that while he was proud of the team’s accomplishments, they should
not loose sight that the real season was now about to commence
with the start of the OMHA playoffs.
In the
battle for first place with their rival, the Whitby Wildcats, the
Minor Peewees rattled off three convincing wins in the last week
of the regular season to secure first overall.
On
Sunday January 6th, the Jr. Cougars travelled to
Peterborough and powered their way to an 8 to 0 win. Michael
Rolph backstopped the Minor Peewees’ to the victory with the
shut-out. The Jr. Cougars displayed an aggressive and relentless
forecheck throughout the game and kept the Peterborough Nationals
boxed into their own zone. Cobourg outshot the Nationals by a 33
to 6 margin. Leading the Cobourg goal scorers was Captain Josh
Maguire with a hat-trick, with two goals awarded to winger Mariah
Wilson and single markers secured by Wyatt Pattison, Trevor
McNeely and Cameron Murphy. Assists on the goals were awarded to
Jack DiMarco, Murphy and Pattison with two each, and, single
assists to Carter Stevenson, Owen Whately and Maguire.
On
Thursday January 10th, the Minor Peewees hosted the
Quinte West Hawks at Memorial Arena with the Jr. Cougars
prevailing by a 5 to 2 margin. Branson Schell was in goal for
the Minor Peewees and made key saves at critical times during the
game to thwart any comeback effort put forward by the Hawks.
Goal scorers were evenly distributed in this game with single
markers provided by Mariah Wilson, Bryan McCormick, Jack DiMarco,
Josh Maguire and Blake Robillard. Wyatt Pattision had two
assists with single assists awarded to DiMarco, Maguire, Cameron
Murphy, Wilson and Shayne Ruddy.
The
next night the Jr. Cougars travelled to Ajax to play the
Knights. With a win, the Minor Peewees would secure first place
in the Lakeshore League. Not to disappoint the loud cheering
section that travelled with the team down Highway 401, the Jr.
Cougars unloaded a 35 shot barrage at the Ajax net while limiting
the Knights to only 9 shots. Leading the Jr. Cougars to
victory with a hat trick was team Captain Josh Maguire, his second
in the last three games. Single markers were awarded to Jack
DiMarco and Owen Whately. Assists were awarded to Cameron Murphy
with two, while Carter Stevenson, Shayne Ruddy, Trevor McNeely and
Anthony Melchionna each chipped in one a piece. Michael Rolph
was in net for the Jr. Cougars.
The
Cobourg Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewees will now host the
Ajax Knights in the first round of the playoffs. The playoff
schedule has not been published as of yet. With the Minor
Peewees success during the regular season, the team has secured
home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

Diemo Minor Atoms Head Into
Playoffs Back On Track... |
The Diemo Minor Atom Cougars ended the regular season with a
convincing 12-0 victory over the Peterborough Nationals on
Friday night at the Memorial Arena. Goal scorers were Wyley
Veinot (4), Matthew Smith (2), Chalmers Mckeen (2), Jon
Campbell, Brody Waller, Gavin Stevenson and Chris Nikolaou.
Although they do not get mentioned on the scoresheet or the
paper often, the defencemen (Gavin Stevenson, Owen Cattell, Jon
Campbell and Matthew Cavanaugh) and the goalies (Damian Hogg and
Sheldon Calbury) continued their outstanding play this season,
earning another shutout.
To recap our season, the Cougars ended the regular schedule in a
tie with Belleville for first place with a record of 18-1-5. We
won 2 tournaments in Fort Erie and Peterborough, losing in the
final of the Cobourg Silver Stick Regional and the semi-final in
Richmond Hill. It has been quite a season. We now look forward
to the International Silver Stick Tournament in Newmarket this
weekend and hopefully a long playoff run.

Leeds Delivers Hatrick
In Impressive Major Peewee Victory... |
Thurs Jan 10 vs Belleville.
Cobourg avenges last week's
tournament loss with a well earned 4-2 victory. The Cougars
dominate and this is reflected in a final shot total of 34-8.
Cameron Leeds is the man for the locals with a huge hat trick
along with a single assist. Mitchell Gibson chips in the other
marker with Riley Line, Trent Stevenson and Ben Plue adding
single helpers.
Fri Jan 11 vs Quinte West.
The Cougars need either a win or tie
to secure 1st place overall in the Lakeshore League. Cobourg
comes out completely flat and if not for the excellent work in
goal by Jayden Snyder, Quinte West could be up 3 or 4 at the 1st
intermission. The Hawks do manage a 2-0 advantage but the locals
even things up with goals courtesy of Plue and Brandon
Dennis within 45 seconds late in the 2nd period. A
mistake at the blueline with just over 3 minutes to play results
in Quinte taking a 3-2 lead and despite furious action in the
final minute the Cougars are unable to pot the equalizer.
After weekend action the ultra
competitive Lakeshore League Pee Wee Division completes play
with the top 4 teams seperated by a paltry 3 points. Although
Cobourg and Whitby finish tied with 41 points, the Wildcats are
awarded 1st place by virtue of 1 more league win than the
Cougars. Cobourg will open the playoffs with a first round
series with Oshawa. The schedule has not yet been determined.

Gibson Scores Last
Minute Goal to Give Major Peewees the Win.... |
An extremely busy stretch for the Jr
Cougars.
The Cougars show grit and
determination in gutting out a 3-2 victory over a much improved
Panther squad. Mitchell Gibson pots the winner with 35 seconds
to play. Hayden Arff and Riley Line also score for Cobourg.
Belleville Tournament Jan 4-6
Game 1.The Cougars come out with
guns blazing and defeat arch rival Quinte West by a score of
6-2. Brandon Dennis leads the charge with a natural hat trick
along with one helper. Jake Campbell, Quinn Cooper and Alexander
Knapper chip in with singles. Gibson has 3 helpers while Ben
Wood chips in with a pair of assists.
Game 2. Cobourg plays a solid
defensive game in recording a 2-0 blanking of the Russell
Riverrats. Gibson bulges the twine twice with the 2nd marker
coming on a penalty shot. Cooper and Micaela Smith chip in with
single helpers. Jake Kawzenuk is solid in registering the
shutout.
Game 3. Another solid effort in
finishing the round robin a perfect 3 and 0 with a convincing
3-0 win over West Mall. Gibson with a pair and Dennis with the
other goal account for the Cougars scoring. Cooper plays set-up
man with 2 assists while Jayden Snyder is efficient in earning
the zero.
Semi Final. Cobourg plays the Rideau
Kings and is full value for a 5-0 win. Knapper with a beauty,
along with Cooper, Dennis, Gibson and Ben Plue provide the
Cougars with balanced scoring. Line and Smith contribute 2
helpers apiece.
A disappointing end to an otherwise
successful weekend as Cobourg falls 4-2 in the final to
Lakeshore rival and tournament host Belleville. Campbell and
Drake Veinot pot the Cougar goals.
Next action...Thursday vs Belleville
8 pm and Friday vs Quinte West 7:45 pm...both at home.
With a pair of wins Cobourg can sew
up 1st place in a very competitive Lakeshore Major Pee Wee loop. (story

Novice Cougars are
Silver Stick Champions ... |
|
The Cobourg Sommerville
Novice Jr Cougars had been planning a trip to the Regional Silver
Stick Qualifier in Midland since August and the day had finally
come on December 29th, 2007. Fifteen excited young hockey players
and their families traveled to Midland to try and get their last
Christmas present, a Silver Stick Championship and a spot at the
International Silver Stick Tournament at St. Clair Shores,
Michigan. The round robin started with a fury as the Cougars
buried Acton 9-0 to begin their quest. Cobourg then faced Lindsay
and the team went away from their normal game plan which proved to
be costly and took it on the chin in a 7-2 loss, Cobourg's worst
defeat of the year. After a good night sleep the boys were ready
to rebound from the disappointment against Lindsay and Innifil
felt the full force of a team determined to get to the semi finals
as Cobourg won convincingly by a score of 7-0. The win gave them
second place in their pool and a semi final match up against the
first place team Orillia from pool A. The scoring summary for the
round robin for Cobourg was Brendan Rylott 3G 2A, Kyle Snyder 3G
2A, Mac Lowry 1G 4A, Nicholas Ainsworth 1G 4A, Kristian Pottle 4G,
Tanner Sheppard 3G 1A, Devin Maudsley 2G 2A, Corey Saman 4A, Jamie
Engelbert 2A, Jordy Harvey 2A, Jacob Kellar 1G and Keegan Ferguson
1A. Earning the shutouts and playing strong between the pipes were
Alex Mercier and Max Carlson.
The semi final was a great
game with Cobourg taking a 3-1 lead into the third over Orillia.
In the third period Cobourg let off the gas and tried to protect
the lead and again went away from their game plan. Orillia pressed
throughout the entire third period and were able to tie it up at
3-3 and send the game into overtime. The boys from Cobourg did not
roll over but took control causing a turnover in the neutral zone
which sprung Brendan Rylott free on a breakaway and he made no
mistake and buried the winner putting Cobourg into the finals.
Both of the goalies played a strong game and also scoring were Mac
Lowry 1G 1A, Kristian Pottle 1G 1A, Kyle Snyder 1G, Tanner
Sheppard 1A, Nicholas Ainsworth 1A and Corey Saman 1A.
The final game was played on
December 31st and could you ask for a better way to end the year
but with a Championship. The Cougars would face Midland who had
beat Lindsay in the other semi 2-1. The Cougars were hungry and
again took charge taking a 3-1 lead into the third but this time
they proved that they had learned their lesson and held on to win
in an exciting and often heart stopping fashion 3-2 out shooting
the Midland team 16-10. Scoring for Cobourg was Kristian Pottle 1G
1A, Devin Maudsley 1G, Mac Lowry 1G, Brendan Rylott 1A, Jacob
Kellar 1A, Jordy Harvey 1A, Jamie Engelbert 1A and Gregory Powles
1A. Alex Mercier and Max Carlson were rock solid in net. This team
is a well balanced team and that was shown this weekend with
everyone getting at least one point. The team has now made the
finals in every tournament they have entered and have brought home
the championship in two out of the four. The boys cannot wait for
the weekend of January 25-27th when they travel to St. Clair
Shores, Michigan where they will take on the other regional
winners from all over North America and make Cobourg proud.

Polymer Extrusion Minor Peewees
Kick Off New Year In Style... |
|
The Polymer
Extrusion Minor Peewees kicked off the New Year with a pair of
wins which kept them in the hunt for top spot in the Lakeshore
Loop. The Cougars last game of the year was an unfortunate
loss in the Silver Stick Qualifier semi finals. However after a
brief break they came out firing in the New Year for two important
wins over Oshawa and Ajax to solidify their position in the
standings.
With Branson Schell
in net, the Cougars out shot the Oshawa Generals 18 to 13 to
squeak out a 2-1 victory. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0
lead only to see the Generals battle back with a late goal
to make the game close. The first period ended scoreless and
the second looked to end the same. With 19 seconds remaining
in the middle period Wyatt Pattison scored the first goal of the
game with help from Mariah Wilson and Jack DiMarco. DiMarco
started the play with a wrap around attempt which was kicked out
by the General goal tender. Wilson secured the puck for her
point blank shot and Pattison finished off the scoring play by
slamming home the rebound.
The game remained
close throughout the third until Josh Maguire scored to give
Cobourg a two goal lead. With 3:19 left in the game Cameron
Murphy found Maguire open in the slot where he wasted very little
time sending a wrist shot to the top shelf. With Cobourg up
two goals and the game winding down, the Cougars went into prevent
mode and shut down the General offense. However with thirty
four seconds remaining and their goal tender on the bench and an
extra attacker on the ice, Oshawa managed to end Schells shut out
bid and bring the game within one goal. The Generals
ultimately ran out of time and the Cougars won an important road
game to kick off 2008 in style.
Two nights later at
home, the Cougars took on the Ajax Knights for their second game
of the New Year. The Cougars offense was supplied by eight
different players on route to a decisive 5-1 victory. The
Cougars opened the scoring late in the first period when Mariah
Wilson scored on a play set up by Wyatt Pattison and Jack DiMarco.
Pattison secured the puck along the boards while DiMarco found
open ice. DiMarco moved the puck behind the net where he
found Wilson wide open in front of the goal. Wilson's second
attempt found its way by the Ajax goalie to give Cobourg its first
lead of the game.
Ajax battled back
to tie the game early in the second but their elation was short
lived. Cobourg went on a 4 goal rampage to take command of
the game and finish off their western opponents in impressive
fashion. Cameron Murphy gave Cobourg the lead they would
never relinquish when he slammed in a lose puck he found at the
side of the net. Brian McCormick did the spade work in the
corners before finding Josh Maguire open for the relay.
Maguire's shot was stopped but Murphy delivered on the rebound to
give Cobourg the lead. Murphy and Maguire continued to
dominate as they connected once again just three minutes later.
This time Murphy's shot was denied and Maguire banged home the
rebound to give Cobourg a two goal advantage. The goal of
the night came midway through the third period when Owen Whately
forced an Ajax turnover and took the puck to the face off circle
before launching a blistering wrist shot to the top corner.
Whately's goal gave Cobourg a commanding three goal lead with just
under eight minutes to play. Finishing off the Cougar
scoring was Wyatt Pattison who banged in a Jack DiMarco rebound.
Ali Razaiy started the play off by finding DiMarco wide open and
in stride. DiMarco made his way to the net for the shot and
Pattison was positioned for the rebound. Pattison's goal
culminated almost twenty five minutes of Cougar dominance in their
decisive 5-1 home victory. Michael Rolph was in net for
Cobourg turning away eleven Ajax scoring attempts. |

Major Atom Cougars Back in
Action after the Break... |
|
After an 8-2 win
over Peterborough and a 4-2 loss to Pickering on the road before
the Christmas Break, the Major Atom Cougars stepped back into
action against the Oshawa Generals at home on Friday January 4th.
With no score after the 1st period, the Generals
intercepted a pass in front of Cobourg’s net, and buried the puck
to make the score 1-0. Cobourg’s Josh Jeschke tied the game,
assisted by Jesse Orser and Harrison Cooper. Oshawa came back
with their second goal, but Cobourg’s Mitchell Jackson, tied it
up, assisted by Josh Jeschke and
Forrest Chalovich. With 8 minutes remaining in the
third, Oshawa pulled ahead 3-2 scoring on a rebound. Despite lots
of play in Oshawa’s end, Cobourg could not score.
Coach Mark Diminie
pulled Cobourg Goalie MJ Weightman with 53 second left in the
period, but Oshawa found the open net to win the game 4-2.
After the game,
coach Diminie said “Weightman had a strong game. Despite having
periods of time with little activity, when called upon, he made
some big saves to keep Cobourg in the game.” Cobourg will meet
Kingston at home Tuesday January 7th at 6:30 p.m, and
are on the road to Peterborough on Sunday January 13th
to end regular season play. The Atoms are currently in forth
place in the Major Atom Lakeshore League standings.

Diemo Minor Atoms Strike
Back... |
|
After a disappointing loss in the Silver Stick final, the Minor
Atom Cougars were glad to hear the news that they had been invited
to the International Silver Stick Finals in Newmarket in late
January. They will compete in a pool with Kanata, Orillia and
Brampton – it should be another interesting tournament.
In the Lakeshore league, the Cougars had slipped to third place by
virtue of a number of ties earlier in the year, and a loss in our
last league game against Belleville. However, 3 games in 3 days
before going back to school would eventually put us back on form
and back into a tie for first place. On Thursday, the team
traveled to Quinte West to take on the Hawks. The Cougars got off
to a slow start, leading 1-0 after the first period. But some
outstanding pressure in the offensive zone led to many
opportunities and the game ended with a 12-1 score. Ethan Diminie
was moved to forward and had a great start, scoring 4 goals in the
game. Other goal scorers included Chalmers McKeen, Wyley Veinot,
Noah Hlapcic, Greg Thomas and Matthew Smith.
On the following day, the Oshawa Generals came to town, eager to
prove they are better than their 8th place standing in
the league. In a very physical contest, with more minutes in
penalties than usual, the Cougars prevailed 7-0. Goal scorers
were Greg Thomas (2), Wyley Veinot (2), John Campbell and Matthew
Smith (2).
In the most important game of the three, the Cougars played the
Whitby Wildcats on the road on Saturday. This game was a big one
due to the fact that Whitby had moved up to first in the standings
and we had not registered a win against them this season (2
ties). With the playoffs on the horizon and Belleville players
watching from the stands, we needed to make a statement and we
certainly did, skating hard all over the ice from the drop of the
puck. After a scoreless first period, some hard work by Chris
Nikolaou paid off with the first goal of the game. More pressure
resulted in 3 goals by Matthew Smith, Noah Hlapcic and Greg Thomas
in the third period and a final score of 4-1.
The Minor Atom Cougars have much to look forward to in 2008 with
one more regular season game, the International Silver Stick
Tournament and the OMHA Playdowns. (story
