Major Peewees Roar To
Victory... |
Thursday Nov 29 vs Kingston
The Cougars roar to a 8-0 victory.
Mitchell Gibson and Jacob Campbell
lead the way with 2 goals apiece with singles to Brandon Dennis,
Riley Line and Quinn Cooper. Alexander Knapper, Cooper and
Dennis chip in with 2 helpers each. Jake Kawzenuk has a fairly
quite night in recording the shutout.
The highlight of the evening is the
first goal of the year from defenceman Trent (just call me
Wayne) Stevenson.
Saturday Dec 1...exhibition @
Campbellford
Cobourg takes their show on the road
and comes away with a hard fought 2-0 win.
Cameron Leeds with assists to
Benjamin Plue and Line produce the first marker and Dennis from
Cooper accounts for the insurance goal. The Cougars are well
deserving of the win outshooting the Colts 33-17 but both
Kawzenuk and Jayden Snyder are sharp when needed in recording
the shared zero.

Hlapcic Shines In Busy
Week For Diemo Minor Atoms... |
After playing only once the previous
week, the Minor Atom Cougars faced a busy week with 3 games on
the schedule. On Tuesday against Clarington, the Cougars were
missing a coach and a player due to a score sheet error in a
previous game. However, the team stood strong against the much
improved Toros. With the game tied in the third, the Cougars
scored 3 times to record a 5-2 win.
On Friday, the Whitby Wildcats came
to town playing very well, having just handed Belleville its
first loss of the season. With the coach back on the bench and
the line-up intact (sort of), the team played very well against
a strong Whitby squad. It was a very entertaining game with
end-to-end action and some outstanding goalkeeping by both
Sheldon Calbury and Damian Hogg. The Cougars out-chanced the
Wildcats but could not put the puck in the net and the game
ended in a scoreless draw.
After not scoring in the previous
game, the Cougars were due for an offensive explosion in
Pickering on Sunday. After a close first period, the goals came
in bunches, and the game ended with a score of 11-1. Noah
Hlapcic scored six goals to lead the way, while Matthew Smith
scored two. John Campbell had one goal and 4 assists in the
victory.
The Cougars sit atop the Lakeshore
loop, remaining undefeated in league play.

Polymer Extrusion/Jr. Cougar Minor
Peewees Split Games In Lakeshore Action ... |
|
The Minor Peewee
Cougars were sitting in second place in their respective loop
heading into the week of league play. Only one point back of the
Whitby Wildcats who were in town for a rematch which would settle
league supremacy once and for all. The Cougars needed the win to
take the top spot while a win for
Whitby would give them much needed breathing room heading into the
December rush.
Unfortunately for
the Cougars the Wildcats came ready and primed to play. They
came out firing from the get go as they opened the score with just
11 seconds removed from the drop of the puck. This has happened to
the Cougars before and they had always regrouped and recovered to
make a game of the contest. However on this night the Wildcats
were too much as they out shot Cobourg 22 to 15 on route to an
impressive 4-2 victory.
Cobourg didn't
score their first goal until the second period while they were
down 2 goals to Whitby. Wyatt Pattison passed to Jack
DiMarco who in turn took the initial shot on net. After a
chaotic scramble in front of the net, Mariah Wilson managed to
bang home the rebound to bring Cobourg within one. There was
not much time to celebrate for the Cougars as Whitby answered back
just 8 seconds later to head into the third period stretch up 3-1.
After Whitby opened
up the game with one more goal, Josh Maguire answered back for
Cobourg. Owen Whately found the puck in the corner where he
dodged several Wildcats before finding Maguire wide open for the
pass. Maguire wasted little time finding the back of the net with
a perfect back hander that left the goal tender guessing.
Playing net for the
Cougars was veteran Branson Schell who kept the came closer than
it actually was.
On Saturday
Cobourg's road trip this week took them east to battle the Quinte
West Golden Hawks. Quinte West needed the win to get closer
to the upstart Cougars in the standing while the Cobourg squad
needed the win to rebound from the loss early in the week to the
first place Wildcats.
The feeling out
process was evident with these clubs as neither team could find a
way to score early as the first period ended scoreless.
Rookie Anthony Melchionna opened the scoring early in the second
with assists going to Trevor McNeely and Owen Whately.
Whately found McNeely in front of the net where McNeely took a
precise shot on net. With two rebound attempts in his favour
Melchionna scored to give Cobourg the first lead of the game. The
Hawks fired back in their own fashion with two quick goals to
finish off the second period.
The third period
belonged to the Jr Cougars as they unleashed their arsenal with
four goals in the last 11 minutes to bring home the road win 6-2.
Bryan McCormick tied the game with an important goal set up by
Josh Maguire. Maguire caused the turnover in the Quinte zone
where McCormick found the pass and took the shot for the goal.
Just nine seconds later Melchionna scored his second goal of the
game to give the Cougars the lead they would never relinquish.
Trevor McNeely won the draw and directed the puck to winger Owen
Whately. Whately in turn found Melchionna streaking down the
wing where he buried the shot between the pads of the Quinte goal
tender to give Cobourg a two goal lead.
Josh Maguire gave
the Cougars a comfortable three goal lead near the mid way mark of
the third period. Rookie Shayne Ruddy secured the loose puck
and promptly found Maguire for the pass. Maguire than let go
a slap shot as he crossed the blue line which found the top corner
of the net for his second point of the game.
To cap the game off
Melchionna roofed a cross crease pass from Owen Whately for his
third goal of the game. Jack DiMarco started the play by
creating the turnover in the Quinte Zone and directing the pass
over to team mate Owen Whately. Whately wasted very little
time finding Melchionna who in turn nailed the hat trick.
The Cougars are now
off for the week as they prepare for CAN/AM Challenge Cup
tournament in Lake Placid, New York, from November 29th to
December 2nd. |

MAJOR ATOMS FIGHT FOR THE WIN ON THE
ROAD... |
|
The Major Atom
Cougars split games this week, losing to Kingston at home, and
defeating the Ajax Knights in what was arguably their best game of
the season. On Tuesday November 20th, Kingston came to
town. Both teams were held scoreless in the first, but Cobourg
got on the board 2 minutes into the second period, with a goal by
Connor Stover, assisted by Callum Wright and Drew Wangen.
Kingston answered back with 2 goals in the second and one early in
the third to go ahead 3-1. Forrest Chalovich-Epp got one back for
Cobourg assisted by Jeff Christensen, and Mitchell Jackson tied
the game, assisted by Jesse Orser, but with 2:24 remaining
Kingston’s scoring line put in a rebound to go ahead 4-3. Cobourg
coach Mark Diminie pulled the goalie to try for the tie, but
Kingston found the empty net with 15 seconds left to make the
final score 5-3 despite a good effort by the Cougars. Next, it
was on the road to Ajax Sunday afternoon. The Atom’s showed what
teamwork was all about. After a rough first period found the team
down after two Cougars were ejected from the game both within the
last three minutes of the first period, Cobourg opened the scoring
with a shorthanded goal early in the second, by Chalovich-Epp,
assisted by Wright. One minute later Cobourg went up by two, with
a goal by Jesse Orser, set up by Josh Jeschke behind the net,
assisted by Mitchell Jackson and opened the third with a goal by
Jackson, assisted by Jeschke and Wright. Goalie MJ Weightman held
Ajax scoreless until the 11 minute marker of the third, when they
scored their only goal of the game. The Cougars defense squad of
Tyler Herron, Tad Ito, Drew Wangen and Captain Harrison Cooper
played with text book positioning and excellent playmaking, to
keep Ajax out of their zone. Cobourg took the win 3-1 win over
Ajax. The Atoms will host the Belleville Jr. Bulls tonight at the
Memorial Centre at 6:30 p.m. (story

A Busy Week For Major
Peewees... |
Brandon Dennis with 3, Mitchell
Gibson, Riley Line and Cameron Leeds with 2 each in a 9-1 win.
Dennis and Gibson each with a pair.
Leeds and Quinn Cooper with single markers in a 6-1 victory.
This game marked the return from injury of goaltender Jake
Kawzenuk who played the 3rd period.
For the 3rd league game in a row the
Cougars and the Winter Hawks settle nothing in a 3-3 tie. Gibson
and Ben Plue stake Cobourg to an early 2-0 lead but Quinte comes
roaring back and grabs the lead before Cooper squares things up
with an assist to Gibson. The tie allows Cobourg to maintain 2nd
place by a point over Quinte West in the highly competitive
Lakeshore loop. The Cougars trail 1st place Clarington by 6
points but hold 3 games in hand.

Cobourg Fire Fighter
Bantams Win Two To Take Top Spot ... |
Cobourg Firefighters Major Bantams stayed in the win column this
past week with a back to back wins against another tough
competitor from the East, Belleville. Putting Cobourg at
the top of the Lakeshore League.
It
started off Sunday night when Cobourg traveled to Belleville,
winning 3-2. Belleville started the scoring in the 1st at the
11 min. mark. It stayed that way for the balance of the period
with both teams having many opportunities. But
Cobourg capitalized during the 2nd period with a solo goal from
Garrett Wilson, who started the ball rolling for Cobourg.
Cobourg went ahead when Tyler Davey, putting another notch in
his belt for the season, got the next goal with a pass from
Cameron Pollard. Cobourg stayed ahead by putting in their 3rd
goal by Cameron Thompson assisted by Mike Rutherford and Todd
O'Rourke. Belleville answered a min. later, but once again,
Cobourg's defence kept true to form, holding the opposing team
at bay for the balance of the game.
Belleville came back to Cobourg Tuesday hoping to get back on a
winning track but left with a sour taste in their mouths as
Cobourg once again beat them 3-0. The scoring started in the
first with a goal by Davey set up by Jamie Quigley and Dylan
Baxter. Quigley set up the next goal for Evan Little 5 mins.
later putting Cobourg ahead for the rest of the game. Many
attempts by Belleville kept Cobourg's defence hopping, but they
couldn't get anything past goaltender Jake Wakely. Cobourg's
3rd goal came in the 3rd with Quigley once again getting into
the mix, passing it to Pollard who set up Jared Nicholls for the
goal. Belleville tried pulling their goalie in the dying
minutes of the game, but to no avail.

Minor
Atom
It was a light week
for the Cobourg Diemo minor atom Cougars last week, with only one
game (the club's home tournament had been scheduled for the
weekend but did not run); however, it was a big game as the
Belleville Bulls came to Cobourg.
Both Cobourg and
Belleville sit atop the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Lakeshore
League with undefeated records. The last meeting ended in a 4-4
tie, so the teams are very competitive with each other. Missing
two regulars, Ethan Diminie and Greg Thomas, from the lineup, the
Cougars needed a good effort to come out on top.
After the first
period ended scoreless, as the teams tested each other out, Brody
Waller opened the scoring for Cobourg midway through the second,
during a scramble in front of the net. The assist went to Dawson
Murphy.
Belleville,
however, responded with a goal of their own less than a minute
later to even the score on a shot from the slot. The rest of the
contest solved nothing and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The
Cougars (9-0-2) know they can play a lot better hockey and have
yet to really put forth a great effort against the Bulls.
Cobourg will host
Whitby this Friday, November 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial
Arena. The Cougars also have road games against Clarington and
Pickering.
Major Atom
The Cobourg major
atom Cougars lost their only Ontario Minor Hockey Association
Lakeshore League game of the week, but they are giving others a
chance to win a Nintendo Wii.
The atoms are in a
four-way tie for first place in the Lakeshore standings with 19
points, as is Whitby who defeated the Cougars 8-2 last week.
Tonight, November
20, the Cougars will host Kingston Township (9-3-1). Game time is
6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Arena.
Cobourg has split
games in the first first meetings in Kingston this season. The
team is holding a fundraising raffle.
Tickets are $3 each
or 4 for $10 and are for sale before every Tuesday night home game
or through any team member. The top prize is a Nintendo Wii Game
System, second prize is two Toronto Raptors Platinum Tickets, and
third prize is a hockey jersey autographed by Paul Henderson. The
draw will take place December 18.
Major
Peewee
Three goals in each
of the first and third periods enabled the Cobourg Auto Collision
major peewee Cougars to defeat Belleville 6-1 in an Ontario Minor
Hockey Association Lakeshore League game.
Six different
scorers provided the offence for Cobourg. Cameron Leeds, Quinn
Cooper, Mitchell Gibson, Benjamin Plue, Riley Line and Alexander
Knapper tallied the goals. Micaela Smith chipped in with a pair of
assists, as did Leeds, Cooper and Gibson while Plue had a single
helper.
Cobourg also
competed in a Silver Stick qualifier in Pembroke this past weekend
and were defeated 2-1 by Quinte West in the tournament's semifinal
round. The Cougars had earned round-robin victories over Napanee,
4-1, and Rideau-St. Lawrence, 4-0, but lost to Kanata 4-1. Quinte
West went on to win the qualifier.
This Friday,
November 23, the Cougars will host Peterborough. Game time is 7:45
p.m.
Minor Midget
Jesse Sheppard had three goals and
Thomas Lang scored twice as the Cobourg Behan Construction minor
midget Cougars defeated Ajax 7-2 in Ontario Minor Hockey
Association Lakeshore League action last week. Goaltender Nick
Hunter earned the victory in net while Kyle McAllister and Levi
George had the other Cobourg goals. George also chipped in
offensively with three assists while Brad Deck, Brent Mullin,
Dylan Bell, Michael Jude, Jimmy Lafontaine, Keith Smith and
Sheppard had one apiece.
Cobourg also earned a convincing
15-3 victory over Clarington last week. Chase Peterson earned the
goaltending win.
Major Midget
Cobourg Scotiabank major midget
Cougars earned a 6-3 Ontario Minor Hockey Association Lakeshore
League victory over visiting Kingston Township last week.
Josh Adams scored twice in the win
while Cory Fry, Travis Gibson, Zack Hutchings and Jeff Mastinsek

Maguire Unloads As
Cobourg Goes Undefeated in Weekly Action... |
|
The Polymer
Extrusion/Jr. A Cougar Minor Peewees took their show on the road
this week with a game in Whitby on Monday and a game in Pickering
on Saturday.
The game on Monday
against the Whitby Wildcat was a preamble for their next home game
against their western foes.
The Cougars have historically had problems with the Wildcats but
have managed some success against them this year. They
defeated the Wildcats in the Thanksgiving tournament in
Peterborough yet fell to them earlier in the season in league
play. Whitby started things off early as they managed to
find a way to get it past goal tender Branson Schell.
With a goal coming just 37 seconds into the game and being on the
road, the Cougars could have fell apart yet they maintained their
composure and scored a few seconds later. Just 23 seconds after
the Whitby goal, the Cougars managed to keep the puck in the
Whitby zone. Defenseman Blake Robillard sent a shot towards the
Whitby goal where Josh Maguire was positioned for a picture
perfect tip in to tie the game.
The Cougars took
their first lead of the game later in the first period when Jack
DiMarco scored his first of two goals for the game. The line
up of Mariah Wilson, Wyatt Pattison and DiMarco provided
continuous pressure in the Wildcat zone. DiMarco found the
puck and found his way to the back of the goal where he found
Pattison for the attempt. The puck continued to rattle
around in the Whitby goal mouth for several seconds when DiMarco
finally found the opening for the score. The Cougars continued
playing well for the balance of the second period but lost focus
with just seconds remaining. The Wildcats took advantage of
a Cougar turnover and they tied the game with just 31 seconds left
to take the momentum into the third.
With the momentum
in their hands, the Wildcats came out firing in the third with a
goal to retake the lead for the first time since the first minute
of the first period. The feisty Cougars answered back just 9
seconds later from the face off. Jack DiMarco won the draw
and found Mariah Wilson on the pass play. Wilson in turn
found Wyatt Pattison who circled around the Whitby net and
sent a precision pass across the goal crease to Jack DiMarco who
one timed it for the score.
The game ended in a
3-3 tie with both teams continuing to play hard but neither could
score to finish off the other. The Wildcats outshot the
Cougars 22 to 14.
The second road
game of the week in Pickering started out slow offensively as
neither team could score in the opening period sending the teams
tied to open the second. Josh Maguire turned it up a notch
for Cobourg as he began to unload on the Panther defense with his
first of four goals. Cameron Murphy started things off on
the play with tough play in the Panther zone. Murphy sent
the puck around the boards where he found Maguire behind the net.
Maguire then circled the net and wristed one above the blocker of
the Pickering goal tender for the first lead in the game.
Maguire continued
to dominate later in the period when he took a puck at the Cobourg
blue line and began his quest to the other goal. With
defenders on his back and in his way, Maguire split the defense
and roofed his second goal of the game over a sprawled goal tender
for a two goal lead.
Owen Whately got
back on the score sheet with Cobourg's third goal with help from
line mate Trevor McNeely. McNeely secured the puck in the
defensive zone and found the streaking Whately with a pin point
pass. Whately in full stride continued with a rush on the
Pickering net where he culminated the play with a blistering wrist
shot finding the back of the net.
Pickering did
manage to score in the second period to cut the lead to two goals
but Josh Maguire wasn't quite finished yet. Early in the
third with a man in the box for the Cougars, Maguire won the face
off in the Panther zone and stick handled his way to the slot.
With defenders at hand, Maguire managed to back hand a rocket to
the top of the Panther goal leaving everyone in attendance in awe.
Pickering answered
back to bring the game within two goals once again, but Blake
Robillard took center stage. With a face off in the Panther
zone, Cameron Murphy blocked a clearing attempt and found
Robillard at the blue line wide open. Robillard cradled the
pass and then launched a wrist shot which found its way to the top
corner of the Pickering net.
Maguire continued
his offensive clinic when he teamed up with Robillard for
Cobourg's sixth and final goal of the night. Robillard found
Maguire at center ice with a precise pass which sent Maguire on
route to the Pickering goal. Cobourg was short handed again
as Maguire weaved his way through the Pickering defense finishing
off his four goal performance with a wrist shot over the
goaltender's glove. Maguire managed four goals with two
being short handed on route to an impressive 6-2 victory where the
Cougars out shot the Panthers 26 to 13. Playing in net for
Cobourg holding the Panther offense in check was Michael Rolph.
Cobourg's next game
is a rematch against Whitby on Thursday night at 7:45PM in Pad
One. |

Major Bantams Come
Back With Vengeance... |
The
Cobourg Firefighter's Major Bantam team is not down and out,
it's flourishing and coming back from the 1st lost of the
season, reeking havoc in Lakeshore League this past week.
Going down to Quinte West on Sunday, they played an amazing
game, beating their eastern rivals 3-1. Strong goaltending from
Jake Wakely and stellar defensive and offensive playing, kept
them ahead of the home team. Starting the scoring first was
Cobourg with a textbook play, Tyler Davey drew across the goalie
then passed to a waiting Dylan Baxter who gracefully shot in for
the goal. During the last 2 min. of the 1st period, Evan Little
whistled a shot past Quinte West's shell shocked goalie,
assisted by Garrett Wilson and Baxter. Cobourg put the icing on
the cake during mid 2nd with another textbook goal set up from
Pearson Piechocki and Little to Cameron Pollard who gladly put
it past the goal minder. Quinte West finally went on the
scoreboard in the closing seconds of the 2nd period. Cobourg's
defence and goaltending took over for the rest of the game,
shutting down Quinte for the win.
Cobourg's offence wasn't finished, putting in 16 goals in the
next two games. The winning started on Thurs. night, when Ajax
came to town, Cobourg came out flying in the 1st, Jamie Quigley
took advantage of a set up pass from Mike Rutherford and Little
putting Cobourg on the scoreboard. Little came back 30 seconds
later with his goal set up by Baxter and Rutherford. The
defensive team of Steve Buttery and Connor Turland put their 2
cents in the mix with help from Baxter, Buttery put in Cobourg's
3rd goal. Pollard put in his 1st of the night during the 2nd
period assisted by Jared Nicholls and Little. Ajax finally
put one in during the 10 min. mark of the 3rd period but it was
too late, Pollard put in his second of the night with help from
Davey and Todd O'Rourke, dashing any hopes from the visitors to
rally back.
Friday night's game against Kingston Twp was completely
dominated by Cobourg's offence with Cobourg winning 11-0, giving
goaltender Wakely a well deserved shutout. The flood gates were
opened in the 1st when Little with help from O'Rourke and
Cameron Thompson, put in his first goal of the night. The rest
of the 1st, Cobourg netted 4 more goals by Pollard, Thompson,
Wilson and Davey with helpers from Davey, Little (2), Baxter and
Jared Nicholls. The second period scoring started with Wilson
putting one through the pipes from a pass by Buttery, Nicholls
with help from Pollard and Turland getting aid from Quigley and
Rutherford. Little netted the next 2 goals, completing his hat
trick, with assists by Baxter and Wilson. Davey put the nail in
the coffin with the 11th goal of the evening with an assist by
Turland.
Cobourg's on the road on Sunday night with a late game against
Belleville, who returns to Cobourg on Tues. night @ 7:45.

House League Hockey
Update ... |
|
Tyke Division House
League ....
The Tyke Division of the
CCHL is once again enjoying another fun action-packed season so
far this year! Tim Hortons' were generous enough to donate brand
new sweaters for all our Tyke teams for the 07/08 season. Shiny
new shirts bearing the team colours of the Canadiens, the Leafs,
the Flames and the Penguins are making great strides every week at
the Cobourg rinks.
The popular "Hustler of the
Week" program is back thanks to our friends at the Cobourg Cougars
and it guarantees that each week a child from each team in every
tyke game is picked as the winner. They get to two tickets to the
Monday night Cougar game where they get to go on the ice and stand
with the Cougars for the National Anthem!
This week the Penguins
played the Canadiens in game one and skated to a 7 to 5 victory on
the strength of some strong offensive output from Nolan Stevenson
to the tune of 5 goals. Tanner Diminie and Josh Sainthill had the
other markers for the Pens while Paddy Massey tallied a hat trick
for the Canadiens with Ben Cavanagh bulging the twine twice as
well.
The Hustler of the Week
award was well deserved and went to Matthew Dewar for the
Canadiens and Josh Sainthill for the Penguins.
Game Two was a back and
forth tilt between the Flames and the Leafs that ended with the
Leafs taking home the win 6-5 on the power of Justin Brydges'
natural hat trick in the third period. Brendan James, Nolan
Fitzgerald and Logan Spagnolo also scored for the Buds. Jonathan
Kellar potted a pair of goals for the Flames while single markers
were each had by Connor MacGregor, Harry Sutherland and Katelyn
Fenton.
Connor Galt had two assists
to take home the Hustler of the Week award for the Leafs while
non-stop hustle by goaltender Nathan Smith saw him take home the
honour for the Flames.
Atom Division House
League ...
The Atom Division continues
to roll along with a fair amount of parody. Games have been
exciting and close each week and last week was no exception.
Game One saw Lakeport Power
square off against Legion Branch 133. Beckett O'Neil led the way
for Legion by pocketing a hat trick and an assist to help pace his
team to a
4-2 victory! The other
marker was recorded by Sam Williams who also picked up an assist.
James Hope was rock-solid all game stopping 22 shots as his team
was out shot 24 to 16. Coach Brian Stadtke was really impressed
with his defensive core's ability to clear the puck all game long
- Dylan Stadke, Liam Bruce, Isaac Claap and Wilson Behan were
manning the blue line.
Brady James scored both
goals for Lakeport and assists were picked up by Brian Cirne and
Alexandria Mackenzie. Coach Shane Weatherby was equally impressed
with his defenseman Timothy Hallatt, Daniel Filce, Jared March and
Jeffrey Lorefice. Their ability to clear rebounds kept the game
close.
Game Two saw a great end to
end battle end in a 4-4 tie between Medicine Shoppe and Kim Joice
State Farm Insurance. Five of the eight goals were scored in the
first period for a torrent start to the match. It was a 3-2 lead
for State Farm after the first period on goals by Cavan Zinke (2)
and Isaak Hoskin. Medicine Shoppe's goals were put in by Aaron
Cotton and Josh Bogaard.
Josh Bogaard picked up his second goal in
the second period to tie the game after two. The third period saw
Myles Willcocks open the scoring and give Medicine Shoppe their
first lead of the game but just over a minute later Cavan Zinke
tied the game up for good for State Farm Insurance.
Goaltenders Jakob Brown and Joshua Mather
both stood on their heads in net for their respective teams all
day long to keep the game as close as it was.
Peewee House League ....
Busy week in the PeeWee
Division with two games on the docket last weekend.
The first match saw Legion
Branch # 133 take on the Co Operators Insurance in a tight hard
fought end to end battle that saw the Legion edge out their
opponent by a score of 4 to 3. Drew Loucks notched a pair,
including the game winner for the victors while supporting single
markers were scored by Jacob Wright and James Bruce. Bradley
Carlton had a pair of assists while Mitchell Dailey took home one
helper.
Taylor Spencer tallied twice
for Co Operators while Tyler Dudley picked up the single. Jacob
Bowen helped set up Spencer's goal. Coltrane Faragher was
rock-solid between the pipes against immense pressure for the
Legion while his opposing netminder Mateo Olivia helped lead his
team to their closest game this season in what was a very evenly
matched contest.
Game two saw the Knights of
Columbus take on the Cobourg Police. Goaltending again was a key
factor in this match that saw the Knights edge out the Police by a
score of 4-2.
Adam Walt went down with an
injury but hung in there to take the win with some superb stops
while Isaac Cotton stood on his head to keep the Police within
striking distance all game. Lucas Pichl helped lead the Knights
defence on the point by pinching to perfection on numerous
occasions to keep the play in the Police end en route to picking
up two assists.
Michael Douglas picked up
two goals for the winners including the game winner and the
insurance marker while Conor Lowry and Daniel Burton picked up
singles. Lowry also had an assist along with Jordan Bissonnette.
The Police sharpshooters were Braeden Lee and Curtis Colbary with
one each while Justin Gill-Bevan picked up a helper too. |

Collision peewee's journey to Frankford for round 2 in the
Lakeshore League version of the " Battle of Ontario".
After a hard fought 2-2 tie 10 days
ago in Cobourg the wreckers are looking for an important league
victory. The locals jump out to an early 1 goal advantage with a
marker off the stick of Brandon Dennis. Trenton answers back
with a tally of their own but big Quinn Cooper restores the 1
goal lead with a bullet from the slot in period 2.
Cobourg once again falls victim to a
breif lapse in the 3rd period and the Hawks count 2 quick goals
within 30 seconds to grab a 3-2 lead. The Cougars show no quit
and are rewarded with the tying goal courtesy of Jake Campbell
with under 5 minutes to play. A frenzied finish produces no
goals and the game ends in a hard fought 3-3 tie.
Cobourg Manager Geoff Skuse." Our
team played well. Trenton has some big kids but we played them
tough. Special mention to both Ben (Doc) Plue and Alexander (Pee
Wee) Knapper, small of stature but big on effort and heart.

Perfection Past For
Bantam Cougars... |
They say all good things must come to an end, that saying
applies to the Cobourg Firefighters Major Bantam hockey team
this week dropping their first game of the season. The game
this past Tues. was against their eastern rivals, Quinte West,
losing 4-1.
The
game was a very tight race throughout with strong goaltending by
both teams, with equal tough defence. Cobourg started the
scoring with a power play goal set up by Cameron Pollard to
Tyler Davey within the first few minutes of the game. Quinte
West answered with their own goal within a couple of minutes
leaving a game a tie until the closing seconds of the 2nd
period.
Cobourg game out flying in the third period, but the opposing
goaltender held his ground, stoning us for the balance of the
game. Quinte West put the icing on the cake with their third
goal. In the dieing moments of the game, Cobourg tried to pull
their goalie, but Quinte West got a lucky bounce to their
waiting forward, who scored on an empty net.
Cobourg will be seeking their revenge against Quinte West, where
they travel to on Sunday. Their next scheduled home games will
be on Thurs. and Fri. (Nov 15,16) @ 7:45 against Ajax and
Kingston Township. (story submitted by

Murphy Scores Two To Charge
Minor Peewees Victory... |
|
The Polymer
Extrusion/Jr. A Cougar Minor Peewees had a light week this week
with only one home game but they delivered another win on their
already successful season. The Cougars traditionally have
come out flat following a tournament and they have had some of
their worst games after winning a championship. This past
week's game against the Peterborough Nationals was considered a
good win but not the best this team has to offer.
The Cougars
continue to get output from many of their players scattering their
offense amongst eight different players on route to a 4-1 victory.
The Cougars out shot the visitors but ran into a hot goaltender
that made the game seem closer than it really was.
Cameron Murphy
started things off for the home town Cougars with his first of two
goals in the game. Shayne Ruddy held the puck in the
offensive zone and delivered the puck into the corner for Bryan
McCormick. McCormick continues to make his presence felt as
he found Murphy wide open in front of the net for the first
Cobourg goal.
Scoring Cobourg's
second goal was Mariah Wilson with helpers going to Jack DiMarco
and Wyatt Pattison. DiMarco controlled the puck behind the
National goalie and attempted an unsuccessful wrap around move
which Pattison relayed over to Wilson for the score.
Pattison and
DiMarco got together again for Cobourg's third goal with help from
Blake Robillard. Robillard continues to be the force on
defense but can take it back the other way to set up the Cougar
offense. Robillard took the puck on a rush from his
defensive zone where he found Jack DiMarco with a pinpoint pass.
DiMarco rifled a puck to the top corner which just caught the
cross bar where Pattison was poised for the rebound.
Scoring the final
Cobourg goal was Cameron Murphy which was his second of the night.
Josh Maguire did the spade work with puck control while he evaded
Peterborough attackers. Maguire's shot on net was handled by the
hot Peterborough goaltender but Murphy was there to sink the loose
puck. Murphy's second of the night was enough to give
Cobourg a descent 4-1 victory which was a much needed win to
maintain their rankings in the ever competitive Lakeshore loop.
The Cougar defense in combination with the steady goaltending by
Michael Rolph delivered the victory on home ice and Cobourg now
prepares for the Whitby Wildcats on the road Monday night. |

Campbell Scores
Overtime/Shootout Goal in Diemo Minor Atom Championship... |
|
With a break in the league schedule,
the Minor Atom Cougars headed to Fort Erie this past weekend. The
team played absolutely inspired hockey, amassing a 5-0 record
overall and bringing home the tournament title in thrilling
fashion.
In the opener on Friday, the Cougars came out
strong, defeating Vaughan 7-0 in an afternoon game. Greg Thomas
and John Campbell each scored a pair. In the second game early
Saturday morning, again the Cougars dominated, putting 8 past the
Port Credit goalie, while the Cobourg netminders allowed not a
single goal. Greg Thomas earned the hat trick, while Chalmers
McKeen scored twice.
In the third game, we faced the
hometown Fort Erie Meteors, who were also undefeated in pool
play. Needing a win to advance, the Cougars played a grinding
style in a very physical contest, eventually prevailing 2-1. Both
goals were scored by Matthew Smith, who played a very strong game.
The win was not all good however, as both Greg Thomas and Matthew
Cavanaugh were lost for the tournament due to injuries in this
game.
On Sunday morning, the Cougars were really in tough, facing the
Toronto Royals with only two full lines of skaters. Dawson Murphy
put the team up with an early goal, but the Royals came back hard,
scoring 3 goals to lead 3-1 into the third. Things looked bleak,
losing the game and down to 9 players due to a suspension and the
previously mentioned injuries; however, the Cougars showed some
growl with devastating blue line hits by Gavin Stevenson and goals
by Wyley Veinot and Noah Hlapcic to tie the game at 3. Dawson
Murphy then scored the winner on a spin around shot from the high
slot. We were one game away from the title!
After some
lunch and some rest, it was on to the final against the Hespeler
Shamrocks. Down to 9 skaters, the parents quietly thought that
the team may not have enough gas left in the tank. However, we
were wrong! The team played an incredible game, up 2-1 late in
the third, victory was within grasp but the Shamrocks had other
plans. They shot the puck at the net and scored to tie the game
at 2 with .2 seconds remaining on the clock. After 10 minutes of
overtime and nothing settled, the game went to a shoot out.
Sheldon Calbury stopped the Hespeler player at one end, while John
Campbell at the other end fired an absolute rocket off the
crossbar and into the net for the victory.
With all that happened to the team, this was an extremely
emotional win. The team came together, stepped up and showed
unbelievable character in the face of injuries and obstacles. We
are very proud of their accomplishments. This was an awesome
performance by a group of young hockey players. (story

Polymer
Extrusions/Jr. A Cougar Minor Peewees Crowned Tournament Champs.. |
|
The Minor Peewee
Cougars made it two straight tournaments in a row and now set
their sites on their next in Lake Placid New York. The
Cougars dismantled their opponents in their home tournament to
take home gold and the coveted title of Champions.
There were five
teams in total battling for the title with Cobourg being one
of three teams from the local Lakeshore loop which included Quinte
West and Ajax. The two other teams were from Innisfil and
Nepean and both were new teams the Cougars had ever faced in
tournament play.
The Cougars began
their quest against their arch rivals from the east .. The Quinte
Golden Hawks. The Cougars had just lost a heartbreaker to
the Hawks in league play and were destined not to let that happen
on home ice. The Cougars unleashed quickly and often as they
soundly beat Quinte 3-0. Goals coming from Josh Maguire,
Jack DiMarco and Bryan McCormick. Assists going to Cameron
Murphy, Blake Robillard, Shayne Ruddy, Ali Razaiy and Josh
Maguire.
Their second game
was against the Nepean Raiders. The Raiders were a big
physical team which tried to set the mode of play early only to
have the Cougars crush their efforts. The Cougars physical
play and pin point passing was too much for the Raiders as the
Cougars won easily 5-2. Scoring for the Cougars were Josh
Maguire with two goals and one assist, Anthony Melchionna with two
goals and Wyatt Pattison getting a single. The Cougars
balanced attack continues to be prevalent as Shayne Ruddy, Blake
Robillard, Trevor McNeely, Carter Stevenson and Ali Razaiy all
picked up assists in the game.
On Saturday, the
Cougars faced off against the Innisfil Winterhawks. The
Winterhawks put a scare into the Cougars efforts with an early
goal in the game. The Cougars were not rattled at all and
continued their style of play that had been successful all year
long. The Cougars managed four goals from four different
players on route to a tight 4-2 victory. Scoring for Cobourg
was Owen Whately and Josh Maguire with a goal and an assist, Jack
DiMarco and Anthony Melchionna with one goal a piece.
Trevor McNeely, Carter Stevenson and Shayne Ruddy continued their
point streak with assists in the game.
The final match for
the Cougars in round robin play was with the Ajax Knights.
The Cougars again fell behind early but rebounded to take their
fourth straight game 3-1. Josh Maguire continued his scoring
streak with two goals and an assist and Cameron Murhpy scored one
goal and one assist. Other point getters for the Jr Cougars
were Jack DiMarco and Ali Razaiy each picking up an assist. The
Cougars were now undefeated in the tournament play and were
patiently waiting the
outcome of another game to see who they battled in the finals.
The Cougars faced
the Innisfil Winterhawks in the final and it was set to be an
interesting rematch. The Cougars had beat the Winterhawks in
round robin play but it was a tightly played game which Cobourg
won with outstanding goal tending from Branson Schell. The
Cougars left nothing to doubt and they set the stage early and
often on route to an impressive 5-0 victory. The Cougars
outplayed the Winterhawks from the drop of the puck and certainly
played a more physical game. The Cougars goal tending duties
in the finals were shared between veteran Branson Schell and
rookie sensation Michael Rolph. The two shut down the
WInterhawks offense on route to the shut out. The shut out in
the final was a culmination of excellent goal tending all weekend
long. The Cougar goal tending tandem managed to hold their opponents to
five goals in five games which was a perfect recipe for a
Championship. Offensively the Cougars were led by Josh
Maguire with three goals, Cameron Murphy and Anthony Melchionna
with singles and assists going to Owen Whately and Trevor McNeely.
The Cougars went 5-0 in the tournament on route to the
Championship and now set their sites on a
tournament in Lake Placid New York later in the month. |

held their opponents to only 5 goals in five games. The

Novice Powerhouse's Battle To
A Tie... |
|
All eyes were on the Cobourg
Novice Jr. Cougars Thursday evening at the Memorial Arena as they
attempted to continue their unbeaten streak against the Belleville
Novice Bulls who also entered Thursday's tilt undefeated. It was a
match up that fans were looking forward to for some time and they
were not to be disappointed. The Jr. Cougars came out strong,
taking an early lead, and continued to hem in the Bulls with an
oppressive forecheck. The Cougars entered the third frame with a
2-1 lead but Belleville came back to tie the game midway through
the period. Cobourg responded with a furious display of
forechecking that generated many chances late in the period but
failed to pay off due to a very strong performance by the
Belleville netminder. The final result was a 2-2 tie that had to
be a disappointment to the Cougars who clearly took the play to
Belleville for most of the night. The fans, however, were treated
to an exciting game of hockey and look forward to the possible
rematch of these undefeated teams on December 13th in Cobourg.
The Jr. Cougars followed up
Thursday's tie with an absolutely dominating performance against
the Clarington Toros on Saturday. The final tally was 14-1,
however considering Cobourg outshot the Toros 85-6, the damage
could have been much worse. Wave after wave of Cougars assaulted
the Toros zone on every shift. Precise passing, tight team play
and suffocating defence resulted in one of the most complete games
the Jr. Cougars have played this season. Special mention goes to
first year player Jamie Englebert who completed his first hat
trick and was a force at both ends of the rink.

Lorenz and Sons Major Atoms Go
Undefeated in Weekly Play... |
|
One game at home and one away
earned the Cobourg Major Atom Cougars 3 points this week with one
win and one tie to improve their record to 8-2-2 as they hold onto
first place in the Lakeshore League Major Atom standings. The
Cougars battled hard against the Peterborough Nationals on Tuesday
at home. Mitchell Jackson led the scoring with a perfect one timer
from Callum Wright assisted by Josh Jeschke. Jeff Christensen
gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead assisted by Jeschke and Jesse Orser.
Trailing by a goal going into the third, Josh Jeschke tied things
up assisted by Jackson and Harrison Cooper to end the game tied at
3. It was off to Belleville on Saturday night to take on the
Belleville Jr. Bulls. Having tied the Bulls at home in their last
meeting, the Cougars were out to win. Once again Jackson opened
the scoring off a pass by Forrest Chalovich-Epp. Chalovich-Epp
came up with 2 more big goals in the second, assisted by Jeschke
and Drew Wangen to give Cobourg the lead going into the third.
The Cougars Callum Wright scored an unassisted goal in the third,
and the Cougars took home the win 4-3 over the Bulls. The Cougars
next game is against Ajax at home, tonight at 6:30.

Cobourg Auto
Collision Major Peewees Battle To Hard Fought Tie ... |
On Thursday Nov 1 Cobourg hooks up
with the Quinte West Golden Hawks in a battle for sole
possession of 2nd place in the very competitive Lakeshore
League.
The Cougars came out strong and were
rewarded with a quick goal off the stick of Ben Wood with an
assist to Micaela Smith. A strong 1st period effort continues
into the 2nd and Quinn Cooper makes it 2 zip for Cobourg with
the helper going to line mate Riley Line. Cobourg is well
deserving of the lead and continues to look for more but their
effort is somewhat stymied by 3 consecutive penalty calls. The
Cougars are able to kill them off successfully but lose
some momentum and the Hawks are able to take advantage with 2
markers in the final 9 minutes of the period.
The 3rd period is fast paced with
good chances at both ends but both Jayder Snyder and the Hawks
tender are equal to the task and a hard fought contest ends in a
2-2 tie. (story submitted by

Cobourg Fire Fighters Majors Play
Whitby To a Tie... |
ONLY ONE GAME ON TAP THIS WEEK FOR THE COBOURG FIREFIGHTERS
MAJOR BANTAM TEAM, TYING WHITBY 5-5. IT WAS A WELL BATTLED GAME
WITH FEW PENALTIES BUT LOTS OF GOALS.
THE
SCORING STARTED WITH WHITBY, BUT A GOAL BY JAMIE QUIGLEY
ASSISTED BY TYLER DAVEY AND CONNOR TURLAND TIED IT UP. WHITBY
DECIDED TO END THE 1ST PERIOD WITH THEIR 2ND GOAL PUTTING THEM

2ND, ON A POWER PLAY, EVAN LITTLE PASSED TO CAMERON POLLARD WHO
SAW TURLAND SNEAKING THROUGH THE WHITBY DEFENCE, AND MADE A TEXT
BOOK PASS FOR TURLAND TO TIE IT UP. COBOURG WENT AHEAD WITHIN
MINUTES WHEN LITTLE SET UP GARRETT WILSON ON A NICE PASS TO GET
BY THE WHITBY NET MINDER. LITTLE DECIDED THAT HE WAS GOING
ALONE ON THE NEXT GOAL, POPPING IN FOR COBOURG'S FOURTH. WHITBY
GOT TO ONE GOAL CLOSING IN LAST MINUTES OF THE 2ND.
COBOURG CAME BACK FROM THE FLOOD DETERMINED TO GET A MORE
COMFORTABLE LEAD AND DID SO WHEN DYLAN BAXTER & LITTLE SET UP
