MAJOR ATOMS
SPLIT GAMES ON THE ROAD... |
|
The Major Atom Cougars had their
work cut out for them as they split games this weekend. The team
headed to Whitby for the first meeting of the season. Whitby won
the match, holding Cobourg scoreless, for a 5-0 win. The team
regrouped and met in Trenton to take on the Quinte West Hawks on
Sunday afternoon. Cobourg jumped ahead to take a 2-0 lead with
Jeff Christensen scoring assisted by Josh Jeschke, and Callum
Wright connecting off a pass by Christensen with 5 seconds left in
the first. Trenton bounced back in the second with three goals in
the last half of the period, and Cobourg found themselves trailing
3-2 going into the third. The Cougars offense took charge, with
Forrest Chalovich-Epp scoring off a perfect pass by Christensen,
assisted by Drew Wangen to tie the game, and Jesse Orser put in
the winning goal, assisted by Christensen and Conner Stove to give
Cobourg the 4-3 win. Christensen had a stellar performance,
scoring the first goal and assisting on all others. The Cougars
will meet the Peterborough Nationals at home Tuesday Oct 30th

Early Lead Evaporates For Diemo
Minor Atoms ... |
|
The Diemo Minor Atoms continued their
undefeated season this week with two big games on the schedule.
On Friday night, the Cougars faced the undefeated Belleville Jr.
Bulls. We came out hard in the first period, with 3 quick goals
by Chalmers McKeen, Greg Thomas and Brody Waller. However, the
Bulls rallied, scoring near the end of the first period and twice
more in the second to tie the game up 3-3. Wyley Veinot scored a
big goal in the third period, but again the Bulls answered and
regulation time ended with a 4-4 tie. A big save near the end of
the game by Sheldon Calbury preserved the tie for Cobourg.
On Sunday the Cougars faced the much
improved Ajax Knights in a road game. The Knights played well in
the first period but could not stop John Campbell from scoring the
first goal of the game. 2 more in the second by Brody Waller and
Noah Hlapcic made the score 3-0. Ajax answered to make it a tense
game. However, in the third, Matthew Cavanaugh scored with 2
Cobourg players in the box to end hopes of an Ajax comeback. Brody
Waller and Wyley Veinot also netted singles and the Cougars came
away with a resounding 6-1 victory. The Cougar defencemen played
a very strong game against a physical Ajax squad.
The team’s record now sits at 9-0-1 in
league play. The Cougars play in a tournament in Fort Erie this
weekend and face Whitby and Belleville in the next two weeks.

Cobourg Auto Collision Peewees
Crush Pickering and Shut Out Peterborough... |
The Cobourg Auto Collision Pee Wee
Cougars concluded another successful weekend of Lakeshore League
action with a pair of victories.
On Friday past the Cougars welcomed
the Pickering Panthers to the not so friendly confines of
the Memorial Arena. After a sluggish start the locals stepped
on the gas in a 5 goal 2nd period and cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Quinn Cooper, Riley Line and Cameron
Leeds contributed 2 goals each with single tallies coming off
the sticks of Benjamin Plue and Brandon Dennis. Mitchell Gibson
played setup man with 5 assists while Drake Veniot and Megan
Behan chipped in with single helpers.
On Sunday evening the Cougars
travelled north to take on Peterborough. A hot goalie made life
difficult early for Cobourg but Captain Gibson pots a second
period marker and Cobourg gets 3 more en route to a 4-0 victory.
Cooper, Line and Dennis are the other marksmen while Jayden
Snyder pitches the big zero.
Cobourg welcomes arch rival Quinte
West to the Memorial this Thursday evening at 7:45 pm.

Cobourg Firefighters
Major Bantam Unbeaten in League Action ... |
The Cobourg Firefighters Major
Bantam hockey team worked hard this week to keep from losing a
game with a 1 tie and 2 dramatic wins. It all started Tues.
night when they travelled to Ajax where the home team jumped
ahead in the scoring with 2 unanswered goals. Cobourg answered
finally at the 6 min mark when Connor Turland fed a pass from
behind the net to the waiting Tyler Davey who happily took up
the charge by putting it between the pipes. Cobourg's 2nd goal
came with only seconds left in the 1st with a set up by Dylan
Baxter to Garrett Wilson. There were no more scoring until the
3rd when Turland got his 2nd assist of the night on his pass to
Mike Rutherford. Not being outdone, Ajax came back to tie the
game within seconds of the celebrated Cobourg goal, leaving the
game a tie.
The boys came home to settle in
for a 2 game home series, starting with Belleville on Thurs.
night. Once again the boys kept it exciting with no scoring by
either team until the 2nd when Belleville took their chance on a
break away, but Cobourg wasn't going to be outdone with a quick
comeback when Evan Little and Tyler Davey made some fancy moves
to get the puck on the line where Pearson Piechocki pushed it
past the net minder. The game stayed a tie until the 3rd when
the final seconds were ticking off the clock and Jared Nicholls
became the hero of the game by putting a ringing shot into the
net set up beautifully by Davey and Cameron Pollard, with only
10 seconds on the clock.
The 3rd game of the week wasn't
any less exciting when Oshawa came in to battle it out with our
boys. They took Oshawa a little too lightly starting off the
game when the other side went ahead with an early goal against
Cobourg's net minder, Jake Wakely. Eventually Rutherford, with
a helper from Pollard, sent a blistering shot from top of circle
to put it in past the shocked Oshawa goaltender. Once again
Cobourg took advantage, using the last 8 seconds of the 1st
period, when Davey popped in the goal with nice assistance by
fellow line mates, Little and Piechocki. Baxter put in the 3rd
Cobourg goal with an assist by Nicholls and Wilson. Oshawa
wasn't yet done, they creeped a little closer to the home town
boys in the 3rd scoring at the 8 min. mark, but Little wasn't
going to let Oshawa get too big for their britches putting in
the 4th Cobourg goal in with an assist by Turland. The visitors
did make it a closer score with 53 seconds left, but Cobourg's
defensive play came together in the end dashing hopes of a tie.
Cobourg's next home game will
be back at their usual time, Tues., October 30 @ 7:45.

Lakeland Multi Trade
Minor Bantams Play Hard in Belleville Tournament... |
|
Tournament hockey
is always exciting and this past weekend was no exception for the
Lakeland Multi Trade Minor Bantams. Playing on Friday in the
first game of the Belleville Bull’s fall tournament against the
home team was exciting for the them, but the size of the ice
surface at Yardman rink seemed massive and it proved to be
challenging for the Jr. Cougars. Although they played a couple of
strong periods
Belleville
came out on top posting a 5-0 score.
The team
continued to try and keep positive with the coaching tandem of
Sean Acheson and Kalvin Shorten doing some line juggling in order
to get the team fired up. It worked and Cobourg was able to beat
their next opponent, the Markham Waxers.
Markham
opened the scoring late in the first period but Cobourg fought
back. The second period was end to end all period but no goals
were scored by either team.
The third period
started off well for the Jr. Cougars when Devon Hartmann scored
Cobourg’s first goal, with assists from James Groves and Tyler
Knox. Markham continued to press but goalie Brody George shut
them down to keep his team in the game. It wasn’t until late in
the third period that Colin Cirne netted the game winning goal,
with help from Brent Acheson and Mitch Dayman.
The third game of
the tournament was a bit lop sided on the score sheet but Cobourg
put up a good fight but was unable to contain a very skilled
Toronto Ice Dog team who eventually won 7-2. Scoring for Cobourg
in the third game was Maverick Wood assisted by Jesse Miedema and
Colin Cirne with assists from Knox and Hartmann.
Cobourg’s next
game is Friday November 2nd against Belleville. Come
out and CHEER! (story submitted by Dave

Cobourg Wins Big In
Early Season Rematch ... |
|
With new
sponsorship in place and the memory of an early season collapse,
the Polymer Extrusions Minor Peewees took to the ice Thursday
against the Pickering Panthers. The Cougars were fresh off a
heartbreak loss to the Whitby Wildcats and were not prepared to
let a consecutive loss be a part of their world. The Cougars
had played Pickering early in the season where they saw a 3-1 lead
evaporate late in the game only to settle for a 3-3 tie.
Wasting very little
time, the Cougars jumped on the Panthers for an early three goal
lead. Leading the attack was Josh Maguire as he pulled the
trigger on the first two goals sinking the hopes of the Panther
faithful. Maguire the anchor of the infamous 3M line scored
just 49 seconds in with help from line mates Cameron Murphy and
Bryan McCormick. Maguire's second goal of the game came just
one minute later when Trevor McNeely intercepted a Panther pass
and relayed it to Maguire for the score. Capping off the
first period was Jack DiMarco who scored unassisted to give the
Cougars the early three goal lead that they would never
relinquish. DiMarco stole the puck at mid ice and took it to
the house while fending off two Pickering attackers on route
to shooting it past the quick glove of the Pickering goalie.
With time winding
down in the first period the Panthers scored on rookie goaltender
Michael Rolph to deny Rolph his second shutout of the
season. The goal didn't faze the Jr. Cougars as they
continued to press and hit and hard work paid off with two more
goals in the second period. Early in the second period Anthony
Melchionna secured the puck in the Panther zone and found Jack
DiMarco wide open in the corner. Deadly behind the net, DiMarco
headed there with the puck where he found Wyatt Pattison in front
for the fourth Cobourg goal. Pattison was denied on the first
attempt but patience with the puck and the fact that he is hard to
move from the post made it easy for Pattison to score on the
rebound.
Cameron Murphy
scored the fifth goal of the game and the second of the period
with help from Josh Maguire. Maguire collected his third point of
the game when he took a pass from Carter Stevenson and found
Murphy in the open for the score. Murphy continues to show
the Murhpy Magic with soft hands and quickly found the back of the
net to continue the Cougar momentum into the third period.
The third period
started slow for scoring but end to action continued much of the
way with each goal tender providing the excitement. The Panthers
found pay dirt to cut the Cougar lead to three but thats as far as
they could get. The Cougar offensive machine opened up again and
managed to score a pair of goals to end the game in a Cougar
victory. Anthony Melchionna took it to the bank with a nice
tip in goal with help from Jack DiMarco and Carter Stevenson.
Stevenson with two points on the night secured the puck inside the
blue line where he found DiMarco in the open. DiMarco took
the shot and Melchionna buried the rebound for his second point of
the game and DiMarco's third.
Capping off the
Cougar victory was speedster Trevor McNeely. McNeely took
passes from Cameron Murphy and Shayne Ruddy to find the goal for
Cobourg's seventh and final goal sending the Panthers down 7-2 and
avenging the early season tie. |

Sommerville Novices Too Strong
For Peterborough and Whitby ... |
|
The Cobourg Sommerville's
novice Cougars continued their winning ways this past week with
victories over Peterborough and Whitby in Ontario Minor Hockey
Association Lakeshore League play.
A home game on Thursday,
October 18, saw the Cougars face a much-improved Peterborough team
who battled Cobourg hard through two periods.
Tireless forechecking from
all three lines, combined with aggressive defence and some timely
saves by goaltenders Max Carlson and Alex Mercier, eventually
turned the tide and the Cougars came away with a 4-1 win.
Brendan Rylott, Corey Saman,
Nicholas Ainsworth and Mac Lowry scored the Cobourg goals.
Assisting was Keegan Ferguson and Kyle Snyder with two apiece, and
Devin Maudsley, Nicholas Ainsworth and Jamie Englebert with
singles.
Playing in Whitby on
Saturday, October 20, the novice Cougars found themselves down 1-0
in the early minutes of the game but rebounded quickly to finish
with a 7-1 victory.
In the second period alone
Cobourg outshot their opponents 23-2, completed 28 tape-to-tape
passes and beat Whitby to the puck 18 times. The final shot tally
was 32-15 in favour of the Cougars.
Leading the scoring for
Cobourg was Tanner Sheppard with four goals while singles went to
Jamie Englebert, Mac Lowry and Jacob Kellar. Devin Maudsley
chipped in with three assists, Brendan Rylott and Kyle Snyder had
two, while singles went to Corey Saman and Kristian Pottle.
Now 10-0, the novice Cougars
will host Oshawa at the Memorial Arena this Thursday, October 25.

Hunco Farm Peewees Win
Two Straight ... |
The Cobourg Hunco
Farm Peewee's enjoy another successful weekend with a pair of
victories in Lakeshore play.
On Friday night
the locals welcomed arch rival Whitby to the friendly confines
of the Memorial Arena. Cobourg has traditionally had a world of
problems with the Wildcats but on this night the Cougars come
out blazing and when the smoke clears Cobourg is an 8-1 winner.
Cameron Leeds, Ben Plue and Quinn Cooper lead the hit parade
with 2 goals each with singles going to Mitchell Gibson and
Riley Line. Jacob Campbell chips in with a pair of assists.
Sunday evening
Cobourg travels to Ajax and comes away with a 4-2 victory.
Cooper again leads the way with 2 markers while Line and
Campbell provide single tallies. Overall a somewhat uninspired
effort but kudos for a sound defensive effort highlighted by
rock solid performances from Micaela Smith and Megan Behan on
the blueline.
Coach Dave
McWhirter is pleased with what he has seen lately. " We still
need to be a bit more consistent game in, game out but we are
going in the right direction. After a slow start to the season
the kids have picked it up and our recent results bear that out.
Our win against Whitby should give us a lot of confidence."
Cobourg's next
action is at home this Friday at 7:45 pm vs Pickering.

Diemo Minor Atoms Still The Team To Beat... |
The Cobourg Diemo
Minor Atoms continued their dominance in the Lakeshore "A" loop
by winning both games they played over the weekend. On Friday
night, Pickering ventured in the Cougar Den and with the Cobourg
squad firing on all cylinders defeating the visitors 8-1. Even
though the team won the game very decisively, Coach Hlapcic,
thought the boys could have played a much stronger game. "there
were times when we were running around a little bit and getting
caught out of position." Unfortunately when you play teams that
are not as strong , as has been the case with many teams this
year, the boys start to pick up a few bad habits. Scoring came
from all lines and the defense and goaltending was once again
stellar. On Saturday afternoon, Cobourg traveled to Clarington
for their first meeting of the year, not sure what to
expect. However just 20 seconds into the opening frame the
Cobourg squad was up 1-0. Heading into the third period Cobourg
held a slim 3-0 lead and it appeared as though Clarington had
hopes of handing Cobourg there first defeat of the season,
but the Cobourg team started to move the puck around and fired 6
unanswered goals in the final frame winning 9-1. The team has
the week off and is preparing themselves for Friday night Oct
26th, when Belleville travels into town, "both teams are
undefeated, and it should be a dandy hockey game". (story

Minor Peewees Take Two
Out of Three ... |
|
Heading into this
week the Minor Peewees were still riding the feeling of being
undefeated in league play. An action packed three game schedule made this
week a grueling test of their fortitude. Starting the week
the Cougars continued to impress as they defeated Oshawa 3-1.
The Cougars have always had success against the "Blue Collared"
Generals but they were always tough fought battles with no clear
domination. In this case the Cougars jumped to an early two
goal lead with goals coming from Mariah Wilson and Bryan
McCormick. Wilson slammed in a rebound from a Jack DiMarco
shot to give the Cougars an early first period lead. Early
in the second period Josh Maguire began things rolling for
the young Cougars when he took a point blank shot which the
General goalie stopped but could not contain. The rebound
found its way to the stick of Bryan McCormick who wasted very
little time burying the rebound for a two goal lead.
The Cougars and
Generals continued to battle back and forth in traditional
historic fashion with very little scoring. Branson Schell
continued to play well in the Cobourg net holding Oshawa scoreless
for most of the game. Oshawa finally scored late in the
third period cutting the Cougar lead to one giving hope to the
General faithful. However with time running out and the net
empty, Josh Maguire showed his billiard skills with a perfectly
banked shot off the boards that found the vacated Oshawa net for
the third and decisive goal for Cobourg.
Thursday night
Cobourg was at home against their Eastern foes from Belleville.
Belleville historically was a team that would give the Cougars
fits but as of late were falling to the upstart Cougars.
With Michael Rolph in net for the Cougars, the Minor Peewees
jumped on Belleville for an early four goal lead on route to a 5-3 victory.
Cameron Murphy
started things for the Cougars with help from Jack DiMarco and
Bryan McCormick. McCormick found DiMarco behind the net who
directed it to Murphy for the score. Early in the second
period Jack DiMarco would score his first of two goals on an
unassisted break away. DiMarco intercepted a Bull pass at
center ice and took it all the way beating the Belleville goalie
for a two goal lead.
Owen Whately
widened the gap for the Cougars just a few minutes later with a
wrist shot to the top corner of the Belleville goal. Josh
Maguire hit Whately with a perfect pass in the deep slot where
Whately took a fierce wrist shot which found the back of the goal
in impressive fashion.
Jack DiMarco gave
Cobourg a comfortable four goal lead late in the second period.
A clearing attempt by DiMarco made its way towards the Belleville
goal where the puck founds its way past the dumfounded Belleville
goal tender for the score.
Now with a four
goal lead, the Cougars looked primed for an easy victory but
Belleville would not have any part of that plan. The Bulls
battled back in traditional fashion scoring early in the third
period cutting the Cougar lead to three. The Cougars would
answer back a couple of minutes later on Owen Whately's second
goal of the game giving Cobourg a four goal advantage once again.
Assisting on the Whately goal was Blake Robillard and rookie Brian
McCormick. The Cougars staved
off the Bulls the rest of the way to finish the game victorious.
Belleville managed to score two more to make it close but Cobourg
continued their undefeated season into the weekend game against
the Whitby Wildcats.
The Cougars took
their unbeaten streak into Whitby on Saturday where they met up
with an unwilling Wildcat squad. Just off their game in
Peterborough during the Thanksgiving Day Tournament, the Wildcats
and the Cougars were ready for the much anticipated rematch.
After a scoreless first period, the
Wildcats struck late in the second period to take the game's first
lead and then struck again less than one minute later. Down
by two goals now, the Cougars fought back immediately when Wyatt
Pattison scored to break the Whitby shutout. Pattison forced
the Whitby turnover behind the Whitby goal and completed his
maneuver with a wrap around play tucking the puck inside the post.
The Wildcats fired back just two minutes later with 45 seconds
left in the second period regaining the momentum heading into the
intermission.
Both teams came out firing in the
third period but goal tending was the key. Branson Schell
continued to play well for the Cougars holding the Wildcats
scoreless. While on the power play, the Cougars cut the
Whitby lead to one by scoring midway through the third period.
Josh Maguire completed a three way passing play with Anthony
Melchionna and defenseman Carter Stevenson. After Stevenson
and Melchionna set up the play, Maguire took a blistering wrist
shot from the top of the slot to beat the Whitby net minder for
Cobourg's second goal of the game.
As time was running down, the Cougars
tied the game with just four minutes remaining to set the stage
for an unbelievable finish. With the Wildcats in penalty trouble
and two players in the box, rookie Anthony Melchionna sent the
Cougar nation wild with a point blank wrist shot to the
goalie glove side. Melchionna was set up for the equalizer
by Wyatt Pattison and Josh Maguire.
However after all their hard fought
efforts, it wasn't meant to be for Cobourg as Whitby sunk
the Cougars late in the game. With just 2.47 seconds left in
regulation the Wildcats found the back of the net to take the win
and hand the Cougars their first league loss of the season.
Whitby out shot the Cougars 28 to 17 and sent a clear message that
winning the Lakeshore loop wasn't going to be easy.
Cobourg's next home game is Thursday October 25th against
Pickering. |

MAJOR ATOMS NET 4 IN THE 3RD
FOR THE WIN... |
|
Four goals in the
third made the difference in the Major Atom’s home win against
Clarington Tuesday. This was the second meeting for the two, with
the Cougars winning match one 6-5, after a defensive collapse in
the third almost cost them the win. The team wasn’t going to let
that happen again. Jessie Orser led the way with the lone goal in
the 1st period, assisted by Jeff Christensen and Drew
Wangen. Clarington held the Cougars scoreless in the second. The
Atoms entered the 3rd trailing 3-1. Learning from past
mistakes, the team got busy, with Forrest Chalovich-Epp scoring,
assisted by Mitchell Jackson. Defenseman Harrison Cooper evened
the score. Clarington answered back, but the Cougars kept going
with goals by Callum Wright, assisted by Chalovich-Epp, and
Christensen, assisted by Josh Jeschke with the final score 5-4.
The Atom’s improve their record to 6-1-1. Coach Mark Diminie said
“Other then our only loss of the year against Kingston this was
the first time we’ve had to play from behind, but the kids showed
a lot of heart and determination. In the last half they played
with some emotion and the effort paid off with four late goals.
There aren’t any easy games in this league and they need to keep
that emotion and determination if their early success is going to
carry on through out the year”.
Their next game is
October 27th when they travel to Whitby..

Cobourg Major Bantams squeaked out a tie against Peterborough... |
As
mentioned last week, the Cobourg Major Bantams squeaked out a
tie against Peterborough 3-3. Cobourg came out of the gate
first with a goal by Garrett Wilson assisted by Tyler Davey and
Dylan Baxter but Peterborough answered with their own goal just
moments later. Cobourg finally scored in the 2nd with a solo
goal by Evan Little. Peterborough tied it again in the 3rd but
Cobourg went ahead with a goal by Baxter assisted by Jared
Nicholls and Connor Turland. Cobourg thought they had pulled
ahead at the finish line but Peterborough tied it up with only
44 seconds left.
Cobourg's power offence came back in line when they traveled to
Kingston for a game Friday. Cobourg controlled the puck most of
the game, working from a skeleton crew of 10. Once again
Cobourg answered first with a goal by Baxter assisted by a nice
collaboration between defensemen Todd O'Rourke and Cameron
Thompson. The scoring continued in the 2nd with Davey, assisted
by Pearson Piechocki and Little but Piechocki didn't stop there,
setting up the next two goals for Little and Davey.
Davey started period #3 with his #3 of the game with help from
Little. Baxter answered his call to duty next with his 2nd goal
of the evening assisted by Little & Nicholls but not being
outdone, Little got his 2nd goal of the night being set up line
mate Davey and Nicholls. The defence wasn't finished putting in
their expertise in the mix with Turland, taking a pass from
fellow defence Steven Buttery, putting it upstairs on the shot
ridden Kingston goalie.
Kingston's only goal came in the the 3rd. Cobourg's next game
is in Ajax on Tues. and will be back at home Thurs. against
Belleville and Friday against Oshawa.

Major Bantams Reach Finals In
Whitby Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament ... |
|
Thanksgiving is a time of thanks and the
parents & coaching staff of the Cobourg Major Bantams would like
to thank our kids for a great weekend of hockey at our Whitby
Wildcats Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament, though we lost in the
final 5-2 against Trenton, we had a weekend of exciting hockey.
We started the weekend with a win against
Vaughan Panthers 2-1, with scoring by Garrett Wilson and Evan
Little & assists by Jamie Quigley & Todd O'Rourke. We had some
solid defence from Steven Buttery, O'Rourke, Cameron Thompson and
Connor Turland (this game and throughout the tournament) and some
solid goaltending from Jake Wakely (MVP of tournament).
The second game, we came upon Amherst NY team,
winning 6-1. Scoring opened up in the 1st by Tyler Davey and
Cameron Pollard, O'Rourke & Evan Little answered the call in the
2nd, while Pearson Piechocki and Buttery finished off scoring in
the 3rd. Goals were set up by Little (with 2), Jared Nicholls and
Davey.
The third game was an early morning win (8:00
a.m.) against the host team Whitby, winning 2-0. Scoring didn't
happen until the 2nd when Cameron Pollard put one between the
pipes with assistance by Mike Rutherford and Nicholls and Little
ending any doubts of a tie with the 2nd goal assisted by Davey.
The fourth game that afternoon was not quite
the nail biter of the earlier game with Cobourg offensively
beating Clarington 12-0. Piechocki opened the flood gates in the
1st with his 1st goal of the game (2 overall), assisted by
O'Rourke and Little. The scoring continued by Turland (2), Quigley
(2), Little, Rutherford, Wilson, O'Rourke, Pollard and Davey. The
helpers went to Wilson, Turland, Davey (2), Nicholls, Pollard (2),
Quigley, Baxter, Thompson, Little (4), Buttery and Rutherford. You
could say that this win was definitely a team effort with everyone
getting a piece of the action including a shut out for Wakely.
The semi final game was another shut out for
Wakely, with a 5-0 win against Ajax. The game was a tough battle
with a number of penalties for both teams, so the defense stepped
up keeping the shots against Wakely to a minimum while the offence
put it in the net. Nicholls started the scoring in the 1st by a
pass from Pollard, which turned out to be the game winner. The
scoring continued though by Little (2), Rutherford and Buttery
assists by Davey & Thompson.
The final game was against our nemesis team,
Quinte West, where the goals by Quigley (asst by Pollard &
Thompson) and Davey (asst by Little and Nicholls) was not enough
to get past them.
VS Kingston
Our second season game was another success with
a 6-0 win against the newest Lakeshore League team, Kingston
Township. After the long weekend of hockey our boys were a little
slow out of the gates, but we finally scored with 2 min. left in
the 2nd period with a goal by Pollard, assisted by Wilson. Baxter
answered right after with his contribution of the game with
assists by Davey & Nicholls. Once again our offence came alive in
the 3rd with a smoker goal from the point from Thompson set up by
Little & Pollard. Davey, Nichols and Wilson finished the night
with the other goals with assists by Little, Pollard (2 total),
Baxter and Davey.
Our next regular season games are on the road
in Peterborough, Kingston and Ajax. Our next home games with be
Oct. 25 (Belleville), Oct 26 (Oshawa).

MAJOR ATOM COUGARS CONTINUE
STRONG... |
|
The Major Atoms
skated their way to a 6-2 win over Quinte West at the Memorial
Centre last week. Strong offense in the third period led to the
win. Goals by Avery Slack, Josh Jeschke, Jeff Christensen, Conner
Stover, and two from Forrest Chalovich helped the team keep the
lead throughout the game, holding their opponent scoreless through
the first two periods. The Atoms now have a 5-1-1 record, after
splitting games last weekend on the road, beating Clarington on
Saturday and taking their first loss in Kingston Sunday morning.
The Atoms next test will be Tuesday Oct 16th at home
against Clarington.
“We started slow against Quinte West”, said Coach Mark Diminie,
“But after a rough weekend in a defensive collapse in the third
against Clarington on Saturday and being dominated by Kingston on
Sunday in our first loss of the year, I thought we showed a lot of
character and came on strong in the second and third. We could
have let those two weekend game bring us down but the guys focused
on our game and came away with a convincing win”. Cheer on the
Major Atoms as they play Clarington at home Tuesday October 16th,

|
Fresh off their
impressive Championship Weekend in Peterborough, the undefeated
Dairy Queen Minor Peewees continued to shine this week in regular
season action. This year's Cougar squad is balanced
offensively as all three Cobourg forward lines delivered real
results against the Peterborough Nationals. So balanced that
eight players from the squad picked up at least one point in
Cobourg's dominant 5-2 victory.
The Cougars jumped
to a 2-0 lead before Peterborough could find the net and then
coasted easily for the win. Jack DiMarco scored his
first of two goals of the night with a nifty passing play by Josh
Maguire and Wyatt Pattison. DiMarco took the pass and
a wrist shot beating the National goalie to the top corner.
Pattison and DiMarco hooked up again for the second goal of the
game coming early in the second period. Pattison relayed a
pass from behind the Peterborough goal where DiMarco redirected it
past the goaltender.
Peterborough
finally broke the Cougar shut out at the 10:44 mark of the second
period. Cougar goalie Michael Rolph was unfazed as he
continued to play well shutting down the Peterborough offense.
The Jr. Cougar "3M" line came through when rookie Brian
McCormick scored from passes from Josh Maguire and Cameron Murphy.
Murphy created a turnover and quickly transformed it
into a quick pass to Maguire who found McCormick for the wrist
shot.
To complete the
teams balanced attack, Trevor McNeely scored just over a minute
later to give the Cougars an impressive three goal lead.
Anthony Melchionna found Owen Whately wide open on a long pass
which turned into a hard shot on goal. The Peterborough
goalie saved the initial shot but Trevor McNeely was there for the
rebound and the score.
The Nationals hit
for one very early in third period to cut the deficit to two but
the Cougars continued to press and the results were delivered.
Murphy and DiMarco hooked up for the final goal giving the Cougars
the 5-2 lead that they would never relinquish. DiMarco
delivered a pass to Cameron Murphy through the crease where Murhpy
easily redirected it for the score. Cobourg's next
home game is Tuesday October 16th against Oshawa. |

Behan Construction
Minor Midgets Dig Deep For Powerful Finish ... |
The Behan
Construction Minor Midgets took home another win this week but
they did it the hard way! As the halfway point of the game drew
near, Cobourg was down 6 to 2 with goals only coming from Tanner
Kelly on a set up from Jordon Gill-Bevan and an unassisted
marker by Keith Smith.
Then the flood gates
opened up - 8, yes that's right , 8 straight unanswered goals
over the last half of the game made the final score 10 to 2 for
the Cobourg clan.
Jesse Sheppard,
Keith Smith, Kyle McAllister and Levi George each scored before
the end of the second period to bring the game to a 6-6 tie.
Smith and George had two assists during this run while
McAllister and Colbie Andrews chipped in with a helper each.
The third period saw
the momentum continue - Levi George picked up his fourth point
of the night when he scored to put them up for good at 7-6.
Markers by Colbie Andrews, Kyle McAllister and Brent Mullin soon
followed to round out the score sheet at a nice even 10 goals.
Jesse Sheppard picked up two more assists while Kyle McAllister
(4 point night too) and Jimmy Lafontaine picked up the other
helpers.
The coach was impressed with the win but
not the roller-coaster ride it took to get the two points!
The team's next HOME game is on Thursday
October 18th against Pickering.

Novice Cougars are Tournament
Finalists ... |
|
Undefeated through
the first four games, the novice Cougars advanced to the final but
were defeated 5-1 by Oakridge.
Cobourg had pulled
out a 3-2 overtime victory in the semi-final over St. Thomas. They
earned victories over Clarington, Quinte West and Oakridge in
round-robin.
Coach Rick
Ainsworth credited that first game against Oakridge as his club's
best performance of the season so far.
With regular season
games this past Thursday and Friday evenings coupled with the
tournament games, the novice Cougars ended up playing seven games
in three days. |

MINOR ATOM REPORT... |
|
The Diemo Minor Atom team started where they left off last year
- on a roll! This was the team that won the Novice East OMHA
championship last season they and had 12 players return to the
club this year. The team has come out firing on all cylinders this
season and been playing a strong game at both ends of the rink-
night in and night out. Every player has contributed on the score
sheet while the goalies have rarely been tested.
A win-loss record of 4 & 0 has left them sitting atop the OMHA
standings early in the season.
They have attended two tournaments so far - losing a semi-final
match to Oakville 4-3 at the Richmond Hill Early Bird Tournament
in September while turning the tables on Oakville in their second
tourney by beating them 5 to 1 in the Championship game at a
Peterborough tourney this past Sunday.
"I'm proud of the way the guys have come out of the gate this
season," explains Head Coach Andy Hlapcic. "It has been great to
watch our new players Ethan Diminie, Chris Nikolaou and Matthew
Smith work their way into the mix so well."
They play this week on Friday Oct 12th at home at against
Oshawa. (story submitted by Andy Hlapcic) |

Cobourg Dominates At
Peterborough Thanksgiving Tournament ... |
|
Five Cobourg OMHA
teams headed north this past weekend in the quest of winning an
early season tournament title. Cobourg sent a clear message
to Ontario that Cobourg is "Hockey Town" as four of five
teams managed to make it to their respective finals.
Behind the stellar
net minding of Branson Schell and rookie Michael Rolph, the Minor
Peewees efficiently and succinctly dismantled their opposition on
route to an undefeated Championship Finish.
The Dairy Queen
Minor Peewees opened their tournament against their Western
nemesis Whitby Wildcats. For the past three seasons Cobourg
had never managed to defeat the Wildcats in league or tournament
play so this match up would set the stage for the weekend outcome.
Confident in their progression, the new look Cougars came
out strong early and often and stunned last years Lakeshore
Champs 3 to 1. Cameron Murphy opened the scoring for the
Cougars while Josh Maguire added two more for the win.
The rest of the
round robin tournament was somewhat anti-climatic as Cobourg was
still charged with their impressive victory over Whitby. The
Cougars then went on to beat St Thomas 3 to 1 with goals coming
from Josh Maguire and rookies Anthony Melchionna and Brian
McCormick. Game three of the round robin for the Cougars was
against the Stoney Creek Warriors. Known for their rough and
aggressive play the Warriors were primed to take on the up and
coming Cougars by intimidation and hard hits. This game ultimately
was the confidence boost the Peewees needed as they were hit often
but not fazed. Matching the Warriors aggression and throwing
in a lot of fore-checking and defense, the Cougars dominated the
game from start to finish. Cobourg outgunned Stoney Creek in
every aspect out-shooting the Warriors 18 to 14 on route to an
impressive 5-0 victory. Highlighting the scoring for Cobourg was a
pair of goals by Jack DiMarco and singles coming from Wyatt
Pattison, Cameron Murphy and Josh Maguire. Branson
Schell played between the pipes for the shut out.
The Semi's were
next and their next opponent was the Orleans Blues. The
Cougars were not looking past the Blues but they knew if they
would win they would face another arch nemesis that has haunted
them historically. Playing in the other Semi final game was
the Oakville Rangers which have always seemed to beat the Cougars
at tournament play. In any case they needed to get by the
Blues first to consider the strategy for the finals. With
rookie goaltender Michael Rolph in the net, the Cougars notched
another victory with a 5-0 blow out early Sunday morning.
Scoring sensation and rookie forward Anthony Melchionna set the
pace by firing 2 early goals giving the Cougars an early lead that
they would never relinquish. Not to be outdone by the
rookies, the Cougar veteran's open fired with three more goals to
propel the Jr. Cougars past the Orleans Blues. Captain Josh
Maguire launched two goals and Jack DiMarco added the fifth and
final score to send the Blues packing and the Cougars into the
tournament final.
The final was set
and anticipation was in the air. The Cougars knew they had
never beaten the Rangers before and the Rangers knew that every
battle so far wasn't easy. In the past eight days the
Cougars had beaten the Belleville Bulls, the Whitby Wildcats and
now had the chance to cap the trio of victories with the Oakville
Rangers. Branson Schell got the call in net for the Cougars
and he knew his opponent well. Schell has played a critical
role in keeping the games close historically but he knew he would
have to play the game of his life to shut down the Rangers.
Early game
"jitters" took hold and the Cougars defense quickly collapsed as
the Rangers scored early in the game to take the lead in the Minor
Peewee final. Coach Stevenson rallied his troops as this
team had been in this situation before and they just had to forge
ahead with their style of play. As the nerves faded and the
play enhanced, the Cougars tied the game with a blast from Josh
Maguire that left the Ranger goalie on his knees. Defensive
stalwart Carter Stevenson kept the puck in the Ranger zone and
found Maguire open for the quick pass. Maguire wasted no
time sending the puck to the top corner evening the score at
1-1.
Rookie forward
Anthony Melchionna joined the team this year coming from
Peterborough and has been an effective marksman for the Jr.
Cougars. Melchionna sent the Cougar nation into a frenzy
when he took the puck from behind the Ranger net and deposited it
behind the sprawling Oakville net minder. Line mates Owen Whately
and Trevor McNeely did the spade work keeping the puck inside the
offensive zone and finally around the back of the goal.
Melchionna without hesitation took it and hit pay dirt to give the
Cougars their first lead of the game.
Time was now a
major factor in the game as the Cougars had the lead and wanted to
protect it yet they had seen the Oakville team score late in the
game many times before. History would not repeat itself if the
defense had anything to do with it. The Cougar defense was
solidified by Blake Robillard, Shayne Ruddy, Carter Stevenson and
Ali Razaiy. Robillard took on the biggest players and
punished them with bone shattering hits that quieted the Ranger
attack and invigorated the Cobourg fan base.
The Cougars play
was gritty and determined as all of the offensive lines produced
real chances and wore down the Ranger defense. Jack DiMarco
provided the back checking and corner work that drove the Oakville
players crazy. Wyatt Pattison and Mariah Wilson continuously
engaged in the offensive zone turning every series into
anticipated frenzy. Owen Whately coupled with Trevor McNeely
and Anthony Melchionna were relentless hitters and they kept the
Oakville defense busy.
The "3M" line of
Josh Maguire, Cameron Murhpy and Brian McCormick was the balanced
line that the Ranger faithful won't want to see again. With
the game still in reach for the Rangers, the 3M line ended it all
with one quick shot. With just 44 seconds left in the game
Maguire launched a blast from just inside the blue line that found
the top corner of the net like a laser guided bullet. The
puck made such a sound that jaws dropped all over the IGA PAD at
the Evinrude Center just prior to the eruption of cheers.
The Dairy Queen Minor Peewee Cougars had capped off an undefeated
championship voyage which resulted in the Cougars outscoring their
competition 19 to 3. |

MAJOR BANTAM UPDATE
REPORT... |
|
The Cobourg Firefigthers Major Bantams are out
of the gate strong this year. Two notches in the win column on the
strength of 10 goals for and only 2 goals against.
The first game saw them down Oshawa 5-2 on the
strength of two goal performances by both Connor Turland and Evan
Little. Cameron Pollard scored the fifth marker in the third to
put the game away. Two assists each were picked up by new addition
Pearson Piechocki, Tyler Davey and Jared Nicholls.
The second match was paced by a solid shutout
performance from Jake Wakely when they defeated Peterborough 5-0.
Unbeatable between the pipes all night, Jake had a great game. On
the score sheet Connor Turland turned it up a notch with a hat
trick (giving him 5 goals in two games!) while Evan Little led the
team with 4 assists on the night - truly defining the meaning of
the word assist. Cameron Pollard and Jared Nicholls potted the
other two markers. Tyler Davey also had a solid night with 3
assists while single assists were had by Pollard, Mike Rutherford,
Pearson Piechocki, and Garrett Wilson.
The team's next home game will take place
Tuesday October 9th vs Kingston Township at 7:45 pm.

Minor Bantam Update
... |
|
There's a new look and feel to the Lakeland
Multi-trade Minor Bantam team this year. The coaching tandem of
Sean Acheson and Kalvin Shorten have coached for years in Cobourg,
but have joined together for the first time to coach this team.
With nine new players on the team, the excitement around this team
is clearly visible - on and off the ice.
They didn't have to wait long to see some
success as the first game of the year against Ajax was successful
on many fronts. Winning the match 7-2 was a tremendous way to
start the new season, with all 3 lines contributing on the score
sheet. Team defense is a major point for the coaches and the
defensive pairings worked well in their first game.
In their second game of the season they lost to
last year's league leading Whitby then followed that up with two
ties before losing to Quinte West on Sunday.
Maintaining the positive attitude of the
players, Sean and Kalvin continue to work on Team play and have
the team out for dry land training at least once a week. They look
forward to playing Oshawa on Tuesday night followed by a home game
on Friday October 14th against Pickering.

MINOR MIDGET UPDATE
REPORT... |
|
The Behan Construction Minor Midgets put out a
solid effort October 2nd when they beat Clarington 5-2. Kyle
McAllister led the way with two goals while single markers were
potted by Jessie Sheppard, Austin Wilson, and Levi George. Assists
were picked up by George, Michael Jude, Colbie Andrews, Tanner
Kelly, Jordan Gill Bevan, Brent Mullin, and Keith Smith. Coach
Randy McAllister was very impressed with his new-look team on the
night. "It was an excellent team effort for a team with five
player changes from last year.",explains McAllister. "All three
lines contributed to the scoring offensively. Defence and
goaltending stood up to the challenge of seven Clarington Power
Plays, resulting in a solid victory."
The second game of the season saw the winning
ways continue when the Minor Midgets defeated Ajax by a score of 7
to 3. Kyle McAllister had another two-goal performance while
teammate Levi George followed suit - potting two goals with an
assist as well. Colby Andrews, Dylan Bell and Jessie Sheppard each
contributed with a goal and an assist to help pace the Minor
Midgets to a 2 and O start to the season.

Hunco Farm Major Peewees Struggle
At Season Start ... |
|
A slow
start to the season is disappointing but by no means a reason to
panic for the Cobourg Hunco Farm Major Pee Wee Cougars. With a win
over Kingston coupled with a pair of losses in Belleville and
Clarington, the Cougars stand at 1 and 2 in league play. A rather
uninspired effort in the Peterborough Thanksgiving Tournament
produced a win and a pair of losses which resulted in Cobourg
failing to move on to the semis. All in all a slow start but bench
boss Dave McWhirter remains extremely optimistic. " There is a
pile of talent in our room. Our staff is new to these kids and
they are new to us. We're a little tight both on and off the ice
right now. We're working on some different things with the team
and we are very confident that once we all get on the same page,
we'll be much better. We just have to accentuate the positive,
loosen up, have some fun and just play hockey like we're capable."

MAJOR ATOM COUGARS OFF TO A ROARING START ... |
|
The Major Atom
Cougars have started strong, with three wins and one tie in
their first four games. Opening the season against Oshawa they
came up big with a 6-1 win. Newcomer Jeff Christensen scored
a hat trick, Harrison Cooper netted two & Josh Jeschke one.
The team's home opener found them against last year’s League
Champs, the Belleville Jr. Bulls. Cougar’s Forrest
Chalovich-Epp scored first, but Belleville tied it up to end
the game. Next, the team headed to Kingston. Goalie M.J.
Weightman played a solid game earning the shutout, as the
Cougars shut down Kingston 4-0. On Oct 1st, the Atoms hosted
Peterborough, playing a defensive game, with Jeschke & Callum
Wright scoring to put Cobourg up 2-0. The team hung on for a
2-1 win, losing Gray Eldridge in the last seconds with a
broken leg. New team coach Mark Diminie said,
"The kids have adjusted well to the new systems I have brought
to the team. At such a young age and so many
changes in coaching staff and style the kids could have
struggled but with their good work ethic and willingness to
listen the hard work is paying off. I couldn't have asked for
a better start." Next game at home vs. Quinte West tonight,
6:30. (story submitted by

CCHL & COBOURG COUGARS SIGN
TWO-YEAR AFFILIATION AGREEMENT... |
|
The CCHL and the Cobourg Cougars have
signed an affiliation agreement that will see them working
side-by-side on and off the ice for the next two seasons in
Cobourg. A unanimous vote at the CCHL Executive meeting last week
was the final stamp of approval confirming the agreement.
The Cougars have been an integral part
of the hockey fibre in Cobourg for over 40 years and being able to
firm up an accord between the two sides was something they truly
felt was important. “We are thrilled to get this agreement drawn
up,” Cougars part-owner Marc Mercier said on behalf of the
ownership group. “The Cougars organization is looking forward to
working closely with the CCHL to help this relationship grow &
evolve for years to come.”
For CCHL President Jim Nairn, being able to put pen to paper and
make everything official was a pleasure. He knows what the
Cougars mean to the young hockey players in the community.
“The kids in minor hockey here look up
to the Cougars,” explains Nairn. “Being able to make the team an
even bigger part of their hockey lives over the course of a season
is great. Signing this agreement is a win-win for everybody
involved.”
Many special events integrating the
Cougars into the community even more will take place over the
regular season. Plans include a family skate, Cougars taking part
in minor hockey practices, minor hockey coaches attending Cougars
practices for tips, plus CCHL player recognition at Cougars Home
Games just to mention a few of the initiatives.
Greg Stevenson will serve as the
liason between the CCHL and the Cougars. Greg is the middle
member of three generations of Cougar followers. He and his
brother Jay both played for the team when they were teenagers -
Jay during the eighties and Greg as a call up during the 90’s.
Their father Gord has been involved with the team since their
inception - he played on the very first Cougar team in 1965! He
is now a life member of the organization.
Gord, Greg and Greg’s six-year-old son
Nolan can be spotted at every Cougars home game.
“The Cougars have been a part of our
family my whole life,” says Greg Stevenson. “Being able to lay the
ground work for that to continue for my son and other kids in
Cobourg is something I am proud to be a part of.”
